Sony have announced the launch of two 12 Megapixel camera toting smartphones, the Xperia S and the Xperia Ion. The S is being marketed as Sony's flagship handset while the Ion is a US only LTE enabled handset. Both are initially running Android 2.3 but with upgrades to 4.0 coming later. The Ion is Sony's first foray into the LTE smartphone market.

The specs from Sony for both are pretty similar with the only difference being the size of the displays:

  • 1.5 GHz dual core processor with Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 Mobile Processor

  • 1 GB RAM

  • Ion - 4.6-inch, 720×1280 resolution reality display

  • S - 4.3-inch, 720×1280 resolution reality display

  • Adreno 220 GPU

  • Mobile BRAVIA Engine

  • 12 MP camera with Exmor R™ mobile sensor

  • NFC

The two devices have quite different looks - the Ion is a sleeker looking device, where the S has a few more design features. The Ion will be available in black, the Xperia S in black or white.

The Ion is on the left, the S on the right - what do you think?

Agreed - does seem a bit odd that there are no hardware buttons. I would be surprised if they really do launch either with 2.3 and not ICS regardless of their press release

According to a leak from phones for you they have dibs on the white Sony xperia s but the rest of the range is for everyone. They are claiming a March release. I got it from electic pig but just noticed there's no source link to back it up
