My O2X will be arriving soon so I have two things I would really like to know.

1. What is the most stable, least issues rom I can put it on it...because if I can't find a good rom and the stock phone is flaky then I am going to want to return it. I assume it is the same procedure for installing roms as on my Acer, ie. install a recovery and then flash custom rom over stock rom?

2. How can I get back to the stock rom if I need to return the phone?


As someone said, "this phone is good hardware let down by poor software" so I really want to get the hardware working with good software and keep it.

Back to factory is possible with NvFlash.

I'm on CM7.1 now and it is stable, but has some glitches, but nothing major.
I like stock better than CM (features work better(for example, using the camera in external apps)  and it's nicer - personal opinion)
20L has too many bugs, however, the release notes of 20M and O seems to indicate almost all have been fixed.
So, I would say MCR Gr6 will be the best rom.

I recently changed from MoDaCo GR5 to Temasek's kang of CyanogenMod7 :

Both of them are good, but the latter is best in my opinion.
Updated several times a week, stable and feature rich.

That solves that.

If I find a rom that has next to no issues I will be keeping the phone anyway but it is always nice to know how to get back to stock.

If I was to install this would I need a specific version of the stock rom to install over?

I just know when flashing a rom onto my Acer it would have to be over a specific version, like 2.3.6 for example.

No, you can flash anything in any order with Clockworkmod. Only thing to watch out for is if you're coming from an Ext4 Rom and going back to an Ext3. Then you need to flash 'backtoext3.zip' first. And when switching Roms, always do a full wipe first (except sometimes when upgrading to a newer version of the same rom, sometimes a wipe isn't required - but sometimes it is. Just read the install notes)

How do I root it?

Install CWM and flash superuser zip?

Although if I am flashing a custom rom it will be rooted anyway, so nevermind.

What is the "date and time" thing?

Is it like a build number?

One thing I am unsure of is ext3 or ext4 builds?

My only experience of ext is using an ext2 partition on the sd card and using link2sd to move the apps there. But there were no specific ext builds for the Acer so I don't understand what the ext builds are.

Cm is ext4 and stock is ext3.
Ext3 is (or has been for a long time) the default Linux filesystem, just like Fat in Dos/Windows.
Ext4 is a bit newer, comparable to NTFS.
The kernels included in stock firmware, don't have drivers for Ext4.
Clockwordmod does have drivers for both ext3 and ext4.
When you install CM or other ext4 based rom, it converts your ext3 filesystem on first boot.
Since CWM has drivers for both fileystem, you can flash an ext3-only rom on an ext4 filesystem just fine.
However, it won't boot since the rom will be unable to mount it's own filesystem.

Since wipes are only wipes (del *.*), you need to format the system and data partitions back to ext3 before installing a rom that has only ext3 drivers included.

I hope this clears things up.

Tried most roms out there and Django Manouche is the rom that have worked best on my 2x so far.

Thanks everyone, it is good to have some recommendations. I am using a redo of the V20o http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1408919  rom and it is working fine I think. I will be trying something else soon. Happy with the phone.

After reading a bit on XDA people are talking about Temasek's Kang and Vedonkas kernel, I am going to try the power-save one as the battery life on this phone is not good.  http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1427646

So far I have tried the rebuild of V20o and it worked pretty good although I had to freeze a couple of stock apps that where sucking power for no reason. Now using Gueste's Golden Hybrid which is quite nice. I have installed 0725 baseband too.

I tried installing Kang first but it wouldn't boot, it might have been cos I was using CWM 4, I am using the most recent CWM now.

Also got my sights set on Django Manouche and Thanatos2X as they are based on V20o.

OK done that, now I have another problem, ES and other file explorers no longer "see" the internal SD card?

By default the internal SD card is located at /mnt/emmc now and the external SD is at /mnt/sdcard.
You can change it to the opposite in cyanogenmod settings --> 'apps' --> 'use internal sd card'.
