Asus have just announced the release of their Padfone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We have written about the Padfone before and there was video of it from CES earlier in the year, but this is the first time Asus have released all the details. Personally, this is the innovative device I have been waiting for.

On its own, the Padfone is loaded with the latest hardware. With a 1.5Ghz, dual-core Qualcomm S4 CPU, and a 4.3" Super AMOLED screen, the Padfone will hold its own against any of it's potential competitors. The biggest feature of the Padfone however, is the accompanying Padfone Station. The Padfone Station is essentially a dock for the Padfone that looks similar to the Asus Transformer. Unlike the Transformer, its the Padfone itself that docks into the back of the Padstation to give you a 10.1" 1280x800 tablet device. Networking is shared between the two so you just need a single SIM for the device. The Padfone Station has its own 6600mAh battery for extended usage. An optional keyboard dock will also be available giving you the potential for a triple battery combo with 9 times the battery life.

Of course, the Padfone is running the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android.

Asus is now showing itself to be one of the most innovative technology companies out there, lets hope there are more surprises to come.

Really hoping that they don't change the dock, so you can use the TF101 one. Slightly disappointed about the lack of Tegra-3, but apart from that, this looks amazing. As long as they don't make it stupidly expensive, I'll get one. Replace my Transformer and Nexus S. Lovely.

Hurrah for MicroSD slot as well! :)

Yeah the stylus is a bluetooth handset - you have to hold it to your ear. If the dock is indeed the TF101 dock as was rumoured a while back, I will be a happy man!

The S4 trounces Tegra 3 in benchmarks so they say.

The dock is the TF101 dock apparently!

You've just made my day... *hunts for credit card*

Just waiting for a release date and priceing now. Chop chop, ASUS! :P

I don't need a new phone but I could do with a new tablet, if they price this right I may have to just have to upgrade my phone at the same time, a great idea though but i wonder how modular or bundled it will be sold.

I am just waiting to see how this is packaged. I would be happy with the Phone and Tablet dock as the bare minimum package at a price to match the existing phones available at the moment (so around the £400 mark!), at that price I would accept the keyboard dock and BT/Stylus as optional additional extras. Of course if they could bundle the whole lot for £400 I would be even happier laugh.gif.

Would be great if the mobile operators offered this on contract. If so we all collectively will need to show restraint so as not to give the impression that it is an in demand phone (hence keeping the price down)

OK not likely I know.

Asus ETA & prices please
