Guest Victor von Zeppelin
The Android Market has been around almost as long the platform itself and has remained relatively unchanged. Sure the UI’s been updated a bit and the web store launched, but for the most part it’s been boring old Android Market. Recently though, Google has been rolling more and more services under its Market umbrella. First there were Books, then Movies and finally Music added to the roster of apps. All these new and interesting services still came under the same Android Market moniker. Until today that is... as Google have announced Google Play, a rebrand of the service that adds a new more interesting name, ditches the old colour scheme and adds a new logo. The Android part of the name has been ditched as the company wants you to be able to access your content from everywhere and not just limit yourself to an Android device. You can access your movies, books and music from any web browser as everything is cloud based. Otherwise, Google’s offerings remain unchanged, but it all comes under a much sexier and more recognisable umbrella. I have to say, that logo does look rather darned nice. More good news awaits as, to celebrate, Google are having a 49p app sale, more details on what is included can be found here. The Market, Books and Music apps on Android will also be updated to Play branded versions soon. Google have produced a whole heap of promotional material, which can be found at: About Google PlayGoogle Blog And of course, you can reach play through the usual market link, or through the new address: play.google.com. Guest Mark Dearlove
liking the updates so far - a movie rental for 20p is not bad - although they could have picked a better launch title! There are a couple of decent films in the 99p bunch. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is an excellent read for 20p
Guest mark2410
Play books makes no sense to me as a name
Guest Pondlife
Naming is poor and seems inconsistent. Market updated itself just now, old desktop link didn't work and initially couldn't find new one as it's not on phone app list as Google Play but as Play Shop. Guest drobson67
I only use Market for getting apps and prefer the old style branding and layout. Not interested in all the other stuff they keep trying to push onto people.
