tried using the Bluetooth GPS Provider app by mobile-j.de to turn the gps on ?
does the gps provider app fail to start the device or is it google maps that isn't seeing it ?

If you're looking in the bluetooth list and waiting for it to say paired and connected it won't. As long as the bluetooth indicator on the gps is indicating a connection you're connected. This will only happen after you select start in the bt gps app.
