After teasing their '$199 tablet this summer' plans, Nvidia have finally revealed more details by introducing their Tegra 3 based 'Kai' - a low cost, quad core platform - at their annual stockholder meeting.

Although the platform has a name, details are still thin on the ground aside from the confirmation that it will retain the quad core (likely 4+1 as we have seen to date) architecture albeit optimised for that lower price point.

From the stockholder meeting recording (33 mins in if you want to listen!)...

Our strategy on Android is simply to enable quad-core tablets running Android Ice Cream Sandwich to be developed and brought out to market at the $199 price point, and the way we do that is a platform we've developed called Kai. So this uses a lot of the secret sauce that's inside Tegra 3 to allow you to develop a tablet at a much lower cost, by using a lot of innovation that we've developed to reduce the power that's used by the display and use lower cost components within the tablet.

Another interesting point mentioned in the call was that Tegra 2 lives on, and also be will be present in the low end phone market.

Nvidia have stated that the reference platform is already out there with manufacturers, so we're likely to see products appearing very soon. Google I/O anyone...? :)
