Regarding the stock launcher, has anyone else noticed that it becomes really unresponsive if you switch off gestures?

I used the stock launcher for all of about ten minutes then put adwex on it :-)

Live wallpaper is just a battery sucker anyway, do you mean a full shut down or just screen off?
