Minor problem with date formatting

I added a birthday to a contact of mine (8 October) in GoogleMail's Contact section, on the phone's phonebook it appears as -10-8.

If I add the full date of birth it still appears in the YYYY-MM-DD format.

Is there a way to change how it is displayed?

What date format is displayed when you go into settings > Date and Time?

Orange Monte Carlo - Stock (refuses to root)
Orange San Diego
