Why should I back up my IMEI number & how do I do it?

Hello all,

First time posting here on these forums.

I have a Huawei Ascend G300 for a few weeks now and really happy with it. I initially installed the stock rom from Huawei to get rid of the Vodafone crap and more recently upgraded to ICS and all is OK so far.

Having had a bit of a read down through some of the threads here I see posters advising people to back up their IMEI number before attempting to install the various roms for the device and to be honest this is not something I'd even thought of doing as I assumed that the IMEI number would have been baked into the hardware with no fear of it being deleted \ corrupted \ overwritten, etc.

What can happen to an IMEI number that would make it a wise decision to back it up beforehand and how do I create this back up.

Thanks for reading.

There is no need to backup the IMEI unless you are downgrading. I don't know where this myth came from that the installation of an official update can "break" your IMEI.

The IMEI backup is created so you can actually use your phone as a phone after using the hacked OEM info partitions to install any desired firmware.

I've upgraded and downgraded about 40 times to various different versions. You do not need an IMEI backup to do an upgrade.
