RAM issues after ICS update

So after a while waiting for the official vodafone ota update, I decided to just root and install a custom version of ICS. After using the infusion ROM, as well as a couple of manufacturer ICS ROM's, I seem to have an underlying issue where I run completely out of ram. I cant multi task, listen to music and text for example, without the app that isn't in use closing down. This was a non issue in Gingerbread, and renders ICS (in any form) pretty much unusable for me.

I have restarted after installing new ROM's, and installed at least three separate versions of ICS.

Is this a normal issue with ICS? Is there a setting i haven't noticed that is responsible for this? Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Im in the process of installing the vodafone nz update right now (from clean gingerbread install using update apps), but i have used infusion, b934 and another version which i cant remember.

I do have a music file of about 1500 songs, which i just realises could be causing slowdown (while the media app archives them). I will let you know if this persists on the NZ update.

Right now im using the official vodafone NZ rom, and it seems to be working. I have more than 130mb of free ram. I have just installed however. I will use normally and update here if the issue persists. As a note, the official update from here is surprisingly bloatware free.

Edit. Something has quietly used 60mb of ram in the last five mins. down to 85 mb. all i did was launch play store and google account sync.

yes had it on and found the ring volume too low ,went back to b934 then installed this b926 rom today and works very well.just wondered because it has the same baseband that it would save time on the dload version .through clockwork

Ok. Im holding steady at 80mb or so free. Maybe this is it. Sadly, the google music app that i loved on other ROM's ist present here. Is there any way to download the app (cant find it on the play store).

Ring volume seems fine to me. Peculiar that those other roms were so buggy for me. I think I'll stick with this until the jelly bean mod is ready and stable, then give custom roms another try. Then again, this rom could crash in the next minute.

Actually, the vodafone rom is weird. they got rid of the obnoxious huawei and vodafone bloat ware, and added an obnoxious Vodafone splash screen.

Yes, there is certainly an issue with RAM utilisation on this ROM. I had the foreground app freeze on my a few times - that could be RAM related. And I also find some apps force closing rather quickly, while other background apps seem to be around forever.

try to set lower background process limit (system>developers options)

It seems over time and usage days/weeks the free ran of 145mb depletes to 40mb, powering off your phone completely and rebooting gives you back your memory. I think this is inherent in all roms as it was the same for me in cm7 on my galaxy europa.

Since rebooting tonight its gone from 145mb to 100mb and i havent used my phone tbh (B936) :(

wouldn't that be a memleak? my Blade with CM7 can run for weeks without a reboot, doesn't seem to have memory problems.

yes, ICS may work better with 1gb RAM, but that's a seperate issue. we're talking about ram management / memleaks. can Tillaz or someone confirm if there really are problems like this?

Actually, your phone having large amounts of free memory at all is an indication that something isn't working right. The Android multitasking system is meant to keep apps resident in memory until something else needs space, at which point it pushes the older, less used app into cache to make room for the new running process.

Precisely. It sounds like some process is leaking and then being killed, freeing a large chunk of memory... And then probably respawning not too long after.

That's the theory, but it is not what the G300 does. It seems to keep old processes around, and kills off the keyboard or the browser that you just switched out of. It is quite ridiculous sometimes.

As the OP says, you may want to change the music you are listening to, and when you want to get back to your app, it is closed.

ICS uses more RAM than GB but I think it is best left to manage the system without task manager or similar applications..for example now i've hot 159MB in stock B934 but in B936 I had 200 MB

Just an update, ive been using NZ OTA (B936) for a day or so since i made this post, and it works like a charm. I have been having some little issues with the web browser (any browser), but listing to music etc works nicely, and ram doesn't fill up to the point of crashing like on earlier ROM's. I suggest using this ROM if you're having any issues on stock or custom ROM's based on an earlier build.
