HD voice is just the microphone quality being good. You use it when you are on the phone

I had a surprise after calling my friend on his iPhone 5. The HD voice quality makes a huge difference. Just wish more phones supported it.

I don't know why but when I put Cyanogenmod on my OSF(which doesn't have HD voice) the voice quality improved and I considered it excellent, really clear as a bell.
I've not really used calls much yet on my OSD to honest but haven't noticed anything amiss so it must be on a par.
Edit :- I might add that I work in a call center so have been on the other end of a LOT of really bad mobiles(even when they've got a landline

No, you and the phone you're calling both need to be on 3g and support the hd voice codec, it's automatic. It really was a noticeable difference, like a very good Skype connection vs a normal mobile phone call.
