Firstly hello!  I am completely new to smartphones - although do have a tech-ish background so can usually handle picking up most stuff.
I have been given a ZTE Skate by a friend with a lot of known problems with the idea of fixing it.
The bulk of the phone works fine - apart from the annoying proximity sensor issues.  I know I can fix this by installing a new rom (currently running an old version of Cyanogen 7 - have new rom ready in case I can fix the next issue) - so here's the biggie:
The person who sold him the phone horribly messed something up with clockworkmod.
Trying to enter the phone into recovery mode just results in it freezing at the splash screen.
So I have figured that I am going to need to link it to the PC and start from scratch - but the problem here is that I am having no joy getting the bootloader drivers to work.  It is just hanging at "waiting for device" and staying as "Android" with an exclaimation mark over it in Device manager.  When I attempt to install the drivers found in this post "http://www.modaco.co...te/page__st__20" I am having a problem with windows refusing to recognise them.  (64 bit Windows 7)
I am pretty determined to fix this phone if it is going to be possible - but as I said at the start of this post am new to smartphones so a little out of my depth!

Download a stock tpt from tpt helper thread and then extract it on the root of a micro SD card with a rom of your choice (CM7 or similar) and then power on with middle button and volume up. Should be done

Solution is to manually pick the driver for device with exclamation mark.
Right click, update driver, let me choose... pick from list,  select zte composite adb interface, confirm compatibility warning.

I have tried this (now) - it allowed all of that this time, but told me that the driver is up to date.  Then when I plugged the phone in and ran the clockworkmod install batch file I have the same problem I had before - it is hanging at "waiting for device" and the phone is staying on the green android logo splash screen.  When I run the install file the composite ADB interface and all other devices associated with the phone disappear from the device manager and are replaced with just "Android" under "other devices" with an exclaimation mark.

Could you clarify a little please?  What is a tpt?  Is that a bootloader program?

Just a further question - as I said before the phone freezes when trying to enter into recovery mode anyway (through holding keys at startup etc) - so I was wondering if something like the program "TPT Helper" would be any use?  Unfortunately as the install on this phone has been tossed up so badly I can't get onto the marketplace to get hold of it any try it and google doesn't seem to be yielding me any real results there - any ideas?

Also I have tried a few other things meanwhile like using the rom installer that comes with cyanogen on the phone (same problem, freezes at the android logo) and trying a few recovery mode downloads from this forum which again cause the same issue - frozen at android logo and "waiting for device" in command prompt window.

You must perform "update driver" procedure while you are in "waiting for device“ state..

Thankyou so much - that worked perfectly!  Tried the driver install a few times and finally the last time it let me get to the list and install - after that the installation was very simple!  My phone now works!
