HTC have launched the 'HTC J Butterfly' in Japan. Contrary to what the name suggests (and my first thoughts), it doesn't feature a super slick rotating flipping screen mechanism a-la-Universal but it DOES feature a stunning 5" 1080P SLCD3 screen rocking a frankly obscene 440ppi!
Launching in December on the AU / KDDI network, the successor to the original HTC J (a 4.3" One-S-alike) features Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (with Sense of course), a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 CPU, LTE, NFC, 2GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage (with a microSD slot) and an 8 megapixel rear camera with a 2.1 megapixel front camera... juiced up by a 2020mAh battery.
At only 140g, 143 x 71 x 9.1mm in size and with a super thin bezel the device is said to feel smaller than it's 5" screen would suggest but, well, we'll reserve judgement until we have it in our hands. At which time HTC might find it difficult to get it back.
In this specific form the device will be limited to Japan, but variants are likely to appear worldwide early next year, with the 'One DLX' name one of those rumoured for a stateside release.
There's a couple of things i'd like HTC to fix before the device heads West - I could live with a little bit of extra thickness in return for a bigger battery (the Note 2 is toting a 3300mAh cell for example) and the ports should not be behind annoying little flaps. By all means retain the bright colours and microSD expansion though, we like those.
