Can anybody suggest how I might restore the use of my avatar in SMS apps?
"My phone number" in Settings --> About phone --> Status

When I bought the San Diego I immediately opted to port my existing number from Giffgaff. Even now, long after the transfer, my number reported in Settings --> About phone --> Status still reports the number I was assigned by Orange when I bought the phone. Consequently, in my text conversations (Handcent SMS) the avatar that usually represents me is blank. I have tried using My Phone Number (by Lytsing) from Play store, but no dice. When the app tries to install it reports "Error: Incompatible with other application(s) using the same shared user ID.
Can anybody suggest how I might restore the use of my avatar in SMS apps?

The number is read off the SIM card. To change this you need to pop the SIM into an old phone or a mobile broadband dongle.

Aha! I had forgotten about that technique. I think that is what I did on my Blade. Will have to see if I can track own a phone with that feature now. I have a '3' mobile broadband dongle. Will that do it? If so, how?
I don't know if the 3 software can do it but the Huawei Mobile Partner dashboard will let you change the phone number. Its in the settings.
It's stupid really that after all these years Android still doesn't have any APIs for writing to the SIM so you can update the number stored
A quick work-around would be to create a contact in your Google account of yourself and add it to a new group. Then on the phone hide this group from showing in the phone list but it'll still be synced and in theory should show up in the SMS app. Worth a try

Thanks for the suggestion, Frankish. Do you mean the one by Lytsing? That is the one that I referred to in my OP. For some reason it won't install.

Just checking you didn't just put the SIM in an old phone then remove it without doing anything else. There is usually an option in early handsets to set your phone number. Is this what you tried? I don't have access to one to do it. I do have a 3G dongle but don't know how to use that.

Are you using ICS?
You should be able to..
Phone>menu>settings>advanced settings>my phone number and type it in...

Obviously that doesn't work or this would be a rather short thread.

[sheepish]
Did not know about the route razzmataz1478 suggested (Xolo is my first experience of ICS). This has actually changed the number on my SIM card as I wanted to do (Settings --> About phone --> Status now reports correct number).
Sadly, the avatar still doesn't show in my messages despite having my own details in the contacts. Is t here anything else I need to do? If I press the blank avatar icon in 'Messaging' it reports "Contact doesn't exist". What, exactly, needs to be in place for the avatar to display? Does anybody have a step-by-step guide?
