When I receive a SMS the phone only lights up the LED on the top.. How can I define it to turn the screen on when I receive a SMS?

Try some of the SMS apps, like PansiSMS or GoSMS, they should have an option for turning on the screen when message is recieved.

Thanks GoSMS did it.. but isn't there a way to do it with the stock app?

I think the Light Flow app can do that.

It's an app which can change all your notifications and LED colours etc. Can use it with the stock messaging app.
