Less than a week until the Nexus 4 release, are you still buying?

Its been 10 days since the announcement of the Nexus 4 phone and as a Galaxy Nexus owner its been a torrid 10 days I can tell you.

Shall I, Shan't I, Will I, Won't I?

One day i'm in the yes camp, the next my other head says

I still love my Galaxy Nexus.

  • Granted, the camera isn't the best, but personally I don't think its anywhere near as bad as the critics bang on about and I would be willing to live with it.
  • Its certainly still quick enough a device, albeit with the odd little slowdown now and then.
  • Screen? Not sure I concur with the pentile haters, I don't see much wrong with the GN screen.
  • Battery life? Well i've got the 2000mAH extended battery in there and it suffices most days, but struggles on those long days away from the charger.
  • 16gb? well already i've cut down on the locally stored music on my GN and would have to do the same on the Nexus 4.

What about finance? Well the arse has well and truly fallen out of the 2nd hand prices of the Galaxy Nexus since the announcement. And due to the very attractive price of the Nexus 4, i'm assuming similar fates on other models? How have the Galaxy S3 prices fared? And other HTC, Samsung and Sony phones? Are they worth less than they were 11 days ago?

I suppose I could get £180/£200 for my mint Galaxy Nexus with all the trimmings, then have to find only £80 for the Nexus 4?

Is the Nexus 4 a £80/£100 better device than the Galaxy Nexus?

So what if you don't jump next week, what are you waiting for? What is on the horizon?

Mobile World Congress at the end of February in Barcelona usually leads to at least one flagship announcement, maybe HTC again. (The One X then followed in April)

    But points to consider:
    • How will the spec be much better than the Nexus 4?
    • Will it get anywhere near the N4 pricing?
    • Are you willing to wait another 4-5 months from today until the new device is released?
    • And what about Samsung? The S3 was released in May 2012, the S2 released Feb 2011, so if they have another early year release it could still 6 months away. And the same questions above need to be asked.

So any new device won't have much better specs, could cost twice as much and won't be available until 6 months from now? Is it just a no brainer to go and buy the Nexus 4?

The price, the specs, the competition, future devices, their timescales?

You will have the best phone, the latest version of Android with guaranteed updates in your pocket TODAY for (in mobile phone terms) a very cheap price.

I think I might have just persuaded myself in typing all that out. ;)

      What about you?

I think the price is a no brainer. I'm buying it outright, selling my Xperia S (Mazuma will give me £120 even if I can't get more on eBay) and I can then drop to a stupidly cheap sim-only deal.

Looking at other phones in direct competition with this, it absolutely laughs in their faces when it comes to price.

For most, this really should be a no brainer, and they should get it, if they are due for an upgrade. It is easily the best deal of the year(and next year until the next nexus device is released, if it is similarly priced).

I however choose to believe that Google will continue this aggressive pricing at least next year, at which point I'll be ready to exchange my GN without a doubt.

I'm buying for one reason: price

I was going to wait until the next nexus (and hope for HTC) but the price of the nexus 4 is low enough to make want to switch from the galaxy nexus's crappy camera, screen and speaker.

I will not buy a non nexus device (unless it has stock android on it), so the galaxy s4 and the next htc flagship device are out of the question for me.

I've deliberated over this for a while, the main attraction is the price and stock ROM.

The main detraction is the sealed battery and fixed memory (for me) and size.

I don't need the latest and fasted phone, but I would like the stock ROM or even better Cyanogen which it will have soon.

But, but the size, fixed battery and memory...

I'm sold on it. 16gb for me. Just a shame it's so damn big - coming from my lovely little xperia ray it's gonna take some getting used to

I've now decided to definitely buy one to replace my ageing Desire

I also need to replace my dying 16gb ipod, so will be interested in using some local storage and GoogleMusic for mp3's.

Does anyone know if you can pre-order a Nexus4 on the play store?

I couldn't find an option for pre-ordering.

I'm definitely getting one, but I'm not sure if I can afford the 16GB as I'm broke atm. I'm selling my HOX to fund it so it'll depend on how that goes.

I could probably live with 8GB if I make use of Google Music and my 40GB Dropbox space. I've always got a few flash drives laying around too. If only I could find a USB OTG keyring as I'm always losing cables.

Well i've started the process, my Galaxy Nexus is advertised. :)

I've mulled over this for too long, so time to take some decisive action.

Just need to hope I can get one of the first batch of Nexus 4's otherwise i'll be stuck using an old smashed up San Francisco for longer than I'll want to. LOL.

It is a tough one....

I had had my heart set on the Xiaomi Mi2, but given Xiaomi's limited release schedule, getting one at a reasonable price any time soon may prove difficult. The annoying thing is the Mi2 stacks up very well spec against the nexus 4 and offers 32gb and removable battery options.

The Nexus 4 on the other hand will probably have better build and obviously OTA updates straight from the Goog. Just wonder if I would miss MIUI from my M1 and some of its useful additions. I know I would enjoy a larger display on the N4 and better app compatibility just love the obscurity of Xiaomi. Saying that i'm sure MIUI will drop for nexus 4 anyway.

My m1 does have a few small 3G issues though, which I think may have something to do with me spilling vodka/lemonade on it a while back although I may be wrong as it mostly works pretty well and could just be network related. But I was also considering a 32gb Nexus 7....

decision decisions...

I suspect the Nexus 4 will be instantly sold out. Especially if Paul buys them all for Johnny Foreigner. :P

There could be new flagship phones launched at CES 2013 in early January. Samsung is promising a 'massive brand reinvention' at CES (whatever that means, maybe they'll make everything look like their Tizen platform, lol)

The Nexus 4 is very tempting....

No. It's about upgrade time, but I don't think I could live with 16GB. I have 40GB on my Optimus 2X and it's always full. In Germany there are no truly unlimited data plans and reception is spotty where I live so the cloud isn't an option. I really think 32GB is the minimum I could work with.

I am definitely buying it. I guess my Blade has come to a time that will need to retire before it dies (poor key responsiveness, camera, lack of hw support in newer android versions).

Pros:

- Price

- Genuine Android (hell yeah)

- Screen resolution

Cons:

- Screen size (it would be shocking after I switch from the 3.2" Blade :) )

Is there a possibility do you think of Google bringing out a 32Gb version in the future a là nexus 7?

They didn't with the Galaxy Nexus, I doubt they will with the Nexus 4.

I think I'll hang on to my desire for a little longer and see if a 32 GB version comes out. The only other phone that tempts me at the moment is the S3 or possibly the Newman N2 which looks pretty similar in spec. I suspect that other phone prces may fall in the coming weeks.

Keeping the lg 2x for a bit.

Bound to be better deals than the device store like with the nexus 7.

Also loads of cheap great phones out soon, all with micro SD & better specs.
