I just want to make sure i don't mess up my ZTE Skate, i'm planning on rooting it and upgrading to jellybean but i just want to make sure i can do it even if it is locked to my carrier (Telenor). A friend of mine had some troubles with it and i'm not sure if it is because it's locked or if he did something wrong.

Yes, rooting (specifically unlocking the bootloader) has nothing to do with the SIM lock. My phone is still locked to VIP, and I could root it just fine.
