My G3 arrived yesterday. I had it posted to my parents house so going to pick it up tonight. Cant wait! Putinboot, I look forward to your instructions :)

all files you need here in one place.https://www.dropbox....xhag/utQJgR3ErX

Hope you like it and as you probably want to get straight to it I will link to a root video as mine is not up yet and I am nightshift tonight.

a video you can watch he also has links to files in description.

check if you have standard recovery, shutdown phone but make sure quick boot is not checked in system settings\accesibilty - quick boot- un tick if ticked.

the voulme up + power button hold until you see it boot and it should boot into standard recovery. If not it does not matter it's just out of curiosity. if it goes into recovery just select reboot with the power button if android is on his arse just leave phone and it will reboot when screen goes off, might take a minute or two or you can pull battery.

1 - watch the video

2 - Install pdanet program and near the end a box comes up plug your phone in with debugging enabled from development options and it will finish and install the drivers.

3 - Save the bin4ry v17 root zip extract to bin4ry v17 root using your zip program and you should end up with 2 files and a folder (called stuff) in a folder called Bin4ry v17 root. copy this fold and go to start

click my computer and paste the folder into your C:\ drive (just makes less typing when you are looking for it.)

4 - click start and in search bar type cmd then hit enter and a command prompt window should appear saying something like . c:\Users\Your name or computer name here\ ie c:\Users\putbinoot>. need to get to work will try edit later if i get a moment.

u still have 3g access tho?....

by the time the whole of the UK gets 4g....Japan will be on something quicker. lol

yes still 3G. Only noticed as I was in a room inside a building with no windows and all concrete and the signal kept dropping to edge but huawei g300 would stay at H as it supports HSDPA. Edited by putbinoot

Thanks very much mate. Firstly...I love the phone! lol...Quality is really good for a chinese device and the screen is excellent and responsive. I need to get an sd card for it yet but I'll do that on the weekend.

First thing I've checked is the recovery and Android is on his arse!...Does this mean that the standard recovery isnt there or doesnt work? Where do I go from here?

I would love to actually take a rom dump of the phone as it is unrooted for future reference but is this possible? Once I've done this I will proceed with rooting and learning android as this is my first android device.

Thanks again

Edit: Putinboot: I have found the below link regarding installation of recovery. Did you by any chance look into this?

yes i did, but it's easier getting the recovery on using mobileuncle than sp flash all the files you need are in that folder i am linking to through my dropbox and i will link to the update as well. Once you get your sd card you are ready to go, just play with the phone until then. What mobile network are you on and have you unchecked system seetings/more/GPRS transfer prefer mode. As my surfing on 3G was better after unchecking that.

update file here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/49172963/g3/G3-20121129-082828.zip

If it does then can you also check if you have recovery on yours or if your android is on his arse as well please? Wonder why they havent installed recovery on these when all android devices are normally meant to have some form of it installed.

Yeh mate its power and volume up at the same time. If it works I think you should be prompted with the recovery menu but if you get android on his arse then you got the same issue as me and putinboot

Putinboot: Can you explain a bit further regarding the update files please.

I downloaded the zip and noticed the update.zip file within it but also another folder which had boot images etc in there. I dont know what this is though.

I think this phone needs its own section now lol.

The zip file should have had update.zip, pdf file JY-G3, database folder and finally a folde with a huge name starting AAAaB3

as far as i could make out and what i did and worked was to copy update.zip and the folder AAAAB3 to the root of the sdcard and just started the phone update system app once it was updated i then deleted the update.zip file and the long name folder. Don't do update until you have done an nandroid backup using cwm that you put on using mobileuncle as I done this and it would appear to have made a backup with the faulty recovery which means you might be able to load this backup and install any future Jellybean update through the phones app. Once you have done that then update, then change boot-from-recovery.p file install mobileuncle and install cwm using it and this will give you permanent recovery with the new update. The thing is if you are not installing roms all the time I don't think there is a need to install a permanent recovery which should mean you can install any future official releases without any problems.

putinboot, thanks for the advice. How do I use mobile uncle to install cwm? Also before all this does the phone need to be rooted so,

1. Root with binary

2. Install mobileuncle

3. Use mobileuncle to install cwm

4. Use cwm to do a nandroid backup (what does a nandroid backup consist of?)

5. Update the phone using update.zip.

Am I right now mate? Also I dont understand that renaming? Where is this done and how and why?

Sorry for all the questions!

rooting

Turn on usb debugging on your phone.

1 install PDAnet select "other" for phone type/make then it will install so far than ask about connecting phone, plug it in to the pc and PDAnet will finish installing itself and the drivers.

2 copy Bin4ry v17 root folder to root of pc C:\ drive just makes less typing later.

3 go to start then in search box type cmd hit enter and a cmd box will appear. saying something like (if your account name is regan) c:\User\regan> anyway this is what you do. If it's not that it does not matter cd \ will get you to c:\>

red text is you typing.

c:\User\regan>cd \ "hit enter"

c:\>cd bin4ry v17 root "hit enter"

c:\bin4ry v17 root>adb \stuff "hit enter" and a lot of text will scroll past whic means you are in the right directory.

c:\bin4ry v17 root>adb devices "hit enter" daemon will start and numbers and letters will appear with the word "device" at the end. If that happens we are good to go.

c:\bin4ry v17 root>runme "hit enter" writing turns green.

c:\bin4ry v17 root>1 "hit enter" a screen will appear on phone select restore my data no password needed. Leave phone it will reboot twice i think it is and that's you done.

nandroid backup and temp cwm install.

turn of usb debugging and connect phone to pc select turn on usb storage and

put the recovery_cwm5.5.0.4_ENG.img on the root of your sdcard.Disconnect phone from pc.

install root check from play store and run it grant it super user

and test for root and it should say you are rooted.

install mobileuncle MTK tools from the play store and run it and

grant it super user. 4th option down (recovery update) select that

recovery_cwm5.5.0.4_ENG.img that you put in the sdcard should be the first thing thats listed.

select it and ok and ok to boot to recovery.

you should now boot to cwm recovery if android is on arse just do the recovery update

again with mobileuncle.

once we are in recovery it's volume up and down to move and power to select.

come down to backup and restore press power.

then press power again as backup is first in the list and already selected.

once backup is complete reboot system should now be selected push power button

and phone will restart.

connect phone to pc select turn on usb storage then navigate the phone through

windows explorer to find sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/and this should be a folder

where the name is the date and time the backup was made. copy this folder to your pc

for safe keeping. this backup is everything, system stuff and your data.

official update install

connect phone to pc and copy to the root of your sdcard the update.zip folder that was inside the G3_20121129 082828 folder you downloaded. Disconnect phone.

In the app drawer of the phone is an app called update system run that and it should install the update.

permanent cwm install.

Install es file explorer from the play store run it and go into it's settings, in file settings select show hidden files the press back key scroll to bottom

select root settings then select root explorer (grant super user) and also check mount file system now back key and again so we are at /sdcard/

select up from the bar at the top and we should now be at / look for a folder "system" press it so we are now /system/ in here is a file called "boot-from-recovery.p"

long press on it select rename go to end and add.bak so it now looks like boot-from-recovery.p.bak and ok it, and it should say name change successful.

go back into es file explorer settings in the "root settings" and un tick mount file system. then hit home key so your are back at the phone desktop.

run mobileuncle again select 4th option down (recovery update) select that

recovery_cwm5.5.0.4_ENG.img that you put in the sdcard should be the first thing thats listed.

select it and ok and this time cancel boot to recovery just shut mobileuncle down and come back to phone desktop.

shutdown phone then once it has vibrated to indicate it's fully shut down press volume up and power and boot into recovery.

once we are in recovery it's volume up and down to move and power to select.

come down to backup and restore press power.

then press power again as backup is first in the list and already selected.

once backup is complete reboot system should now be selected push power button

and phone will restart. Now we have a backup of the phone with the update on it and also what should be a permanent cwm recovery image. Again copy this to your pc.

to test your cwm is permanent shitdown the phone again and try to get back into recovery which if all has gone well should be no problem, then just select reboot system to restart phone again.

ICS spellcheck fix. ie red lines under text on android keyboard.

copy the two LatinIme files to the root of your sdcard.

start es file explorer and mount file system again in the settings then navigate to/system/app and look for the file LatinIME.apk long press on it and rename LatinIME.apk.bak

navigate to /sdcard/ look for the two files you put there and in turn long press on each and select move to and then navigate to /system/app and ok it. go into es file explorer settings and un check the mount file system and exit es file explorer.

select your text app or something that will need the keyboard and at first start the voice dictation will come up just select back key then try to write again and the keyboard should come up and when you test the red lines should be gone from under the text.
