Hi Everyone

I decided it's time to retire the San Francisco. It's now pretty old, and despite all best efforts the CPU and the small intrnal storag really hamper the phone. Also the Android versions have no moved on.

I was quite up for the San Diego, especially with it's lowered price, but from reading as of today's date:
  • the bootloader is locked;
  • custom ROMs canot be made;
  • it remains SIM locked.
The other options appear to be:
  • Huawei Ascend - much lower spec, only single core 1ghz, and lower RAM;
  • Sony Xperia Sola - unsure if it hs a good development community;
  • Sony Xperia P - development community and £150+
Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

The orange San Francisco has jelly bean and it got it a few months ago so they haven't really moved on;I still have one myself. Anyway,those 3 phones that you are debating on are far worse than the orange San Diego. So, if you were to root any one of them (not the xperia p), overclock it, put a faster custom ROM on it, and mod it in any way, it still would not be as good as this phone which is £100.

The xperia P is a better phone in my opinion with development.without development, they are equal but the xperia costs more.

You can get the Galaxy S2 for £199 now but it's still only roughly equivalent to the OSD. Whether it's it worth double the OSD would be a decision only you can make. The only other alternative in my eyes would be the Xperia P.

In what way is the OSD on a much higher level than the Xperia P, the Xperia P is dual core and it will get stock Jelly Bean as well as custom ROM based Jelly Bean I am sure.

Is the OSD hardware that much more superior than Xperia P?

The OSD has only got Ice Cream Sandwich with no definite Jelly Bean planned.

As for the San Francisco running Jelly Bean I just don't think that the hardware can run the software fast enough anymore, the San Fran is just too slow unfortunately.

The OSD I fear will just fall by the wayside in 6months.

Thanks

I said the xperia P was better. They are very similar, I just think the Sony would be higher quality. Jelly bean has been made already for the OSD so they should definitely release it

Assume by Huawi Ascend you mean the g300, if so check the g330.
Yep the Xperia P will get JB in March, March! and that will be it from Sony look at their track record. So to say the osd will fall by the wayside whilst it's likely true, all of the other phones mentioned here thus far aren't going to do any better in future.

Yep it's dual core and this is single but they are very different cores. Try them both, I'd never seen GB run as it did on osd.

If you have some money it's no brainer go for a nexus 4. If you don't then the osd is a great device, the ascend is very 'hackable' device with a lot of developpement but do you really want to buy a devices with specs completely outdated. I mean it's not a problem when you allready own it, but buy it now? It's almost 2013 and phones to come will have 2 gigs of ram quad core and screen with 1920x1080. The ascend g300 has a 800x480 resolution with 1ghz single core processor and 512mb of ram...

I got the osd simply because of the chipset, I expected intel to deliver at thr thing thry are good at, and deliver they did. The osd outclasses every single core and just about if not all dual cores, it is excellent!

Sim lock is not all bad, T-mobile and Virgin Media both work and both provide good pay as you go deals.

Jellybean coming very soon which no doubt will be excellent on the osd just like gingerbread and Ics have been.

There is no better for the price at this time.

No custom roms at the moment, it is still a possibility but no major loss as this device is fine as it is, root is available too.
I would just be happy with custom kernels :)

I'm on o2 so would have to wait 3months before Orange will unlock it.

How about a HTC Sensation?

Or dump the network with the worst 3g in the country? Mind you your specific mileage may vary on that.

Thought you wanted a phone that wouldn't be falling by the wayside in 6 months, now looking at one that fell by the wayside over a year ago... oO

If the sim unlock causes that much hassle for you I would have thought the Xperia P would be as good an option to the Sensation but cheaper and already unlocked with JB due in March(?).

That is a good question. I will give it a go - project butter may be missing, but it sounds like the powerful CPU makes it slick anyway.

If you want to play around with ROMs like on the OSF, you should go with the G300 - cheap, neat, and you can get a wide choice of ROMs. But it is not playing in the same class.

If you want to spend more money and still get bang for the bug, check out the Nexus 4. I am seriously tempted - it outclasses everything else in the same price range.

Thanks so much for the help guys. Really appreciate your thoughts.

The Nexus 4 is unfortunately a bit too expensive

The Sensation is older, but has a huge developer base and already has Jellybean ROMs. It's is also about £90.

The Sony is a better looking phone, slightly better hardware but not as large a developer base. If Sony does not push development I think that the development will die.

It seems the development side of things is important to you.....if so then do not get the osd. If you want a rock solid daily device then get the osd :)

Or Galaxy Nexus. You can get them for less than £200 now. Have a look at the classifieds on avforums.com as they quite often come up for sale.

Thanks guys.

Does the Sensation not have as much going for it as the Galaxy S 2?

I never thought I could get a Nexus, I need to check out the community for the Nexus. But it is more expensive than all others.

The Xperia is maybe now the odd one out?

The sensation and gs2 are similar. The sensation has a better screen but less RAM.

Maybe he should wait for the Jiayu g4. There are already leaked photos on gizchina so it may be coming out soon. It has a quad core processor, 2 gigs of ram, a 13 megapixel camera + 2 megapixel front camera, and a 3000 mah battery. There is also a thinner version with a 1800mah battery.

Jiayu have stated that the phone should cost exactly the same as the G3, so it will be around $180-$210 (£120-150)
