Does a phone need to be unlocked before flashing?

I'm just wondering if I can try updating my Huawei g300 to ics whilst I wait for the unlock code?

Oh bloody hell, I wish I hadn't pressed that

I doubt whether the phone will retain its unlock once a flashing is done.For iPhone once we update the unlock state goes back to the locked state.
