ever since i have rooted my phone and connect it to my tv to play vids the screen no longer goes blank. the osd actually shows what it is playing as well. before i rooted, whenever i played a vid through hdmi it would go blank (the screen).

Use a different video player; you may have removed social gallery which is the default video player.
Try watching a youtube video
