try a HTC One S 2nd hand or refurbished too

There wasn't much at the £170 price point, at £100 there's no new phone that even comes close.

There is nothing with the power of this even close to £100, maybe have a look on the G300 thread, they are looking at cheap imported Chinese phones, maybe one of them would fit the bill.

Just for reference have a look at the Antutu difference between the OSD and the G300 with a 1ghz processor in it clocked to 1.2ghz

Have you considered unlocking

If you do, keep emphasising that it's an OSD and NOT an iPhone. Keep telling them that the imei is similar to an iPhone but IT IS NOT AN iPhone. You never know your luck, they might actually take note and rush it through for you.

The "other" storage problem makes low internal storage wp8 phones more troublesome than they would already be though.
No video out from what I can find if that's significant.

No video out, but will take an SD card up to 32GB

That can actually make the "other" storage problem worse as it caches some things on sd card on tiny internal memory.
