Not having much luck using the installers from the Play Store, will pushing the bins into /system/bin work?

No, because of NAND protection - you need to install it via recovery.

Yeah figured that out in the end!

To be honest I've been on a wild goose chase, I wanted busybox so I could install the helper for SecureSettings. That needs to be done via recovery anyway!
