Along with Samba, Ovivo Mobile were one of the two recommended FREE ways of getting internet access in our article Mobile Broadband on a Budget (Or FREE)

Be sure to check out that article if you haven't already done so.

The way Ovivo provide a free mobile service is to tag adverts along with their internet service. You browse, they add adverts. Up to this point though, adverts have been few and far between, but it sounds like they are coming for real now.

To facilitate this change, Ovivo are changing their APN settings. So you'll need to update your phone/tablet/chromebook/dongle etc. by the 31st May otherwise they say your 3G connection will stop working after that date.

OVIVO is changing its internet settings and by the 31st May, the gprsconnect.com APN will no longer provide Internet access, but will still be available for MMS. Our settings guides have been updated and we will be contacting you with new settings throughout the course of May.

Configuring your device

When you put your OVIVO SIM Card into a phone which has not been used on our network before, we will detect it and send Internet Settings out to your device by SMS within two hours. This will allow you to connect to the Internet from your mobile device.

MMS will need to be manually configured using the guides on this page.

Our Over the Air Configuration System, will not work with Tablet, USB Modems, Android devices that have been “rooted” or iOS devices that have been “jailbroken”. These devices will need to be configured manually using the settings guides below.

Some older devices may also not be able to receive our settings by SMS. If you request us to send settings through the form below and these do not come through within 24 hours, it means that your handset does not support these settings messages and will need to be set-up manually.

As described in their text, you can set your device up manually using This PDF

Basically the new APN Settings are as follows:

Name: OVIVO

APN: ovivomobile.com

MCC: 234

MNC: 15

APN Type: internet (or try default, supl, dun, fota as advised by Skip Tracer)

Leave any other fields as (not set) or in their default state.

We will be interested to hear from you how intrusive these new adverts are when they come. They show below (on iPhone) how they will work.

Our advertising is designed not to be intrusive, so you’ll predominantly only see it when you start browsing. If you’re browsing for over 10 minutes or so, you may see further featured advertising relevant to your browsing experience.

When you sign-up for our service, you give OVIVO permission to use your data for marketing purposes. We will NEVER sell your information to 3rd Parties, but we use it to understand what kinds of products and services may be relevant to show you. Rest assured, your privacy is key and our privacy policy is available here on our website for you to read.

Just changed mine, adverts are a lot more prominent already, the main difference is there's the odd page between pages that you can't navigate away from for a few seconds. Can't day I've noticed any in apps but my ovivo sim is in a second phone that rarely gets taken out of flight mode.

I'd say it's about as intrusive as the ads on free spotify accounts, so for the price you're paying it's completely usable, I'd hope if you pay for bundles you get less adds though

I just tested the APN change on my Chromebook and I kopped for an advert straight away when browsing.

I'm not sure what would happen if you stayed on gmail or the docs url all day, whether you'd see further ads?

I'll be interested to see how the ads are pushed to you under those circumstances.

"I'm not sure what would happen if you stayed on gmail or the docs url all day, whether you'd see further ads?"

the ads are delivered by a proxy server or DNS proxy. So https would always bypass it. just the same for every other network.

Just a little correction to your APN settings here after trying to change mine and not being able to get it to work.

The * in the APN Type is a link to a footnote at the bottom of the Ovivo settings page and not part of the APN settings.

So if APN Type: internet does not work the foot note says to try :default, supl, dun, fota

This worked for me.
