Is overclocking really worth it outside gaming?

Hi!

 

I recently tried my hand at overclocking the phone after a long time of not caring about it, it's set at 1.114Ghz where it's stable and doesn't crash. However I'm struggling to see any real benefit from it, Antutu score went about 100-150 points but that's it. Although I have no real basis of comparison, I see no difference in it's usage with the overclock in place, maybe a slightly smoother animation in GO Launcher (using CM7 btw), but even that is so small that I'm not sure if it's only placebo.

 

I'm asking other users, do you think it's worth having the G300 overclocked when it's not used for gaming in the slightest? Do you feel any benefit from it? I can't tell if browsing or whatever else is faster because I have no real idea how the phone reacted without the overclock, but since I don't notice anything I'm wondering if it's worth keeping the overclock and the battery hit...

FWIW another user (george109) posted in another thread last night saying that oc was only really of use to gamers and that other users would see little benefit.

I wonder if any of the reportedly dead G300s were being overclocked?

Personally, I think the reason is bad flash memory - If you look through the "Dead G300" Threads, then you can see that lots of them have reported CWM saying

E: Can't mount /cache
E: Can't open /cache

I think that the cause is bad flash memory - look at all of these:

I'm guessing here, but I think that the causes here could be bad flash memory in other partitions, for example the bootloader and other vital partitions, that are needed for the phone to boot.

 

EDIT: I think I am right! If you look at the person who tried to install the ADB, and flash zips with the ADB it says:

error: Flash Write Failure

Anyway, For overclocking, have a go! Download Easy CPU Control from the Play Store, if you do not have an overclocking app included in your ROM. Then go into it, and untick apply at boot (if it isn't already). Then click save, and grant it superuser permissions.

Now, leave the minimum and governors alone, and put the max up by one level at a time (Do not just set it to as high as it will go! :P). If the phone crashes or freezes up, then simply remove the battery, wait 10 seconds and put it back in. Now put the battery back in and the phone should restart. Now, set the max level 2 levels below where the phone froze up (This is the only setting that works properly for me, as at 1 below, the phone reboots 10 seconds or so after anyway) and press save. Now test your settings for a few hours. When you are happy that it works, check the apply at boot box and click save. When you are making any modifications, to these settings, make sure apply at boot is unchecked, in case the phone does crash, as on some apps you can get into a bootloop. I like Easy CPU Control, as if there is an unclean shutdown (ie the phone crashes) then it reverts to the default settings.

Thanks george. Bad flash could obviously be the cause of some failures but then others report the device simply not showing any sign of life at all. I wondered if these might be due to a burnt out CPU/Soc? But it's just a guess...

That is a useful tool - It could be a burnt out CPU or SoC, but I think it might be something to do with the flash as well, as some people have said that they never overclocked. Also, if the bootloader is damaged, the phone will not boot at all. It will not show any signs of life, but so will a burnt out CPU or SoC.  :wacko: 

There are so many possible causes!
