****************************************************************************************************************************

I have successfully unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP, rooted, and flashed a custom ROM.

Below is the methods I followed:

1. First I downloaded drivers for the y300 from here: https://files.dc-unlocker.com/backend/r.php/public/EF65FFC8D36E40118BE98BC29A9C1216

Extract the drivers and launch 'DriverSetup.exe'

Wait for this to install fully.

configuringsoftware.png

Then downloaded dc-unlocker and install: https://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads

2. Next, turn off your phone and remove the battery for 5 seconds. Replace battery, and hold vol + and - and the power button for several seconds, until screen goes a violet colour. If your phone just boots as normal, go into your phone settings and turn off 'fast boot'.

Now connect your phone to your computer via USB and wait for the drivers to install fully.

3. Once your phone is connected, load up dc-unlocker. In the 'Select Manufacturer' box change it to 'Huawei phones'. Leave everything else as it is (including the 'select model' box).

Click on the large magnifying glass button. This will scan the phone for its bootloader code and show the unlock code required after around 10 seconds.

Copy and paste the 16 digit "Bootloader code" somewhere safe (like a notepad file).

Close the dc-unlocker, turn off your phone (you may need to remove the battery), and unplug from the computer. Reboot your phone.

WARNING- THE NEXT STEPS WILL FACTORY RESET YOUR PHONE: IF YOU NEED TO BACK UP ANYTHING, DO SO NOW!

4. I then followed Step 2 onwards from this webpage: http://huawei-y300.tumblr.com/post/47366836617/how-to-unlock-and-root-huawei-ascend-y300-all

I also had the lovely guidance of danny19901 :)

The files needed for these next few steps are at the top of the page, or you can use the newer version which danny19901 kindly uploaded for me: https://www.dropbox.com/s/336npm7l2xb8b1b/Y300-AiO-ROOT-v1.5.zip

You need to extract this file and follow the instructions on the website linked above (or those given by danny19901 below).

At step 11 of the website instructions, when running 'unlock_bootloader.bat', type in the 16 digit unlock code generated by dc-unlocker.

Once you have completed these instructions, all being well, your phone will have an unlocked bootloader, be rooted, and have TWRP recovery installed.

From here you can choose and install a custom ROM.   I choose FusionX (http://www.modaco.com/topic/363879-rom-fusionx-huawei-y300-beta-7-full-hwa-discontinued/) and this seems to have great performance and be very stable. Danny19901 recommended CM 10.2 for y300 ( http://www.modaco.com/topic/365931-jb-431-cyanogenmod-102-rom-all-nightly-builds-available/ ) which is android 4.3 and very good, though has a few issues (see below for details). I'm planning on trying this soon.

Installing Custom ROMs:

To install a custom ROM, download the file and copy it to the root (ie not in any folders) of you phone SD card.

Turn off your phone and restart into TWRP by holding vol + and power for several seconds.

Once in TWRP, go to 'wipe' and swipe across to wipe the phone system caches (this won't erase your sd-card).

Then go back to the main menu and click on 'Install'. Scroll down to the ROM file you copied to your SD card and click on it. Follow the instructions on-screen.

Once this is complete (maybe a minute or so) reboot your phone.

Fingers crossed you should have successfully installed a custom ROM!!!

I would like to thank danny19901 for his help with all this and below are links to the websites I used for other guidance:

Feel free to ask for clarification if you need it. I offer this consolidated knowledge for other y300 users, but don't blame me if it all goes wrong for you!

If any more knowledgeable folks out there see any problems with my walk through or think something should be changed, then please let me know.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Hi all,

I've been wanting to root and flash a custom ROM to this phone since I bought it, but previously it seemed hard to do and with mixed results.

More recently it seems there are quite a few good stable ROMs and the process has been simplified / tried and tested.

However, there now seems to be many fragmented threads about doing all this and it all gets mixed up with the g300, g510 and Blade 3(?).

I'm looking for some consolidated advice as to how to go from a stock UK -100 B182 to a rooted phone with custom ROM.

I used to have a ZTE Blade and rooted and flashed several different ROMs with out probs so have some experience, though I need clear instructions and tested methods.

My end goal is to have a pretty vanilla android experience without the Huawei cr#p and bloatware and with increased performance, as I find the stock ROM pretty laggy.

I've requested the bootlocker unlock code from Huawei and found a website detailing how to unlock this, but need advice on:

- TWRP or CWR? How to install either?

- How is root achieved?

- A stable vanilla ROM with the best performance (free of bugs).

There may be some people who say that the info is already out there, but I have looked around and can only find unclear fragments of different processes. I'm sure other Y300 owners would like a consolidation of knowledge and the process too.

Many thanks in advance to the extremely knowledgeable people out there on Modaco :)

(P.S. if there is already a thread that has all this info, please feel free to share the link)

Hi, thanks loads danny for your help!

I've requested the unlock code from Huawei, but I just found dc-unlocker (https://www.dc-unlocker.com/huawei-ascend-y300-unlock) so in the process of trying the unlock through that.

I've only ever used Clockwork before but TWRP seems to be more popular now I guess.

Mockingbird, that's for your help too. What does AOSP mean? I've noticed it mentioned on some ROMs (like FusionX).

Thanks :)

No, not yet. I've read that some people recently have had to wait ages (over a week!). Was using dc-unlocker, but just discovered that you have to pay.

Doesn't look like I need to pay after all. Got the unlock code but now need to do the unlock. I was using this video:

but also was going to use the info on this website: http://huawei-y300.tumblr.com/post/47366836617/how-to-unlock-and-root-huawei-ascend-y300-all

Wasn't sure which one would be best (was thinking the tumblr website) and didn't want to mix up two processes. I've noticed that the website also deals with TWRP. I presume it would be best to use the version you just uploaded as it will be more recent?

Thanks!

When done that put your phone in fastboot mode (power off pull battery count to 5 then put in then hold vol + and power together keep holding you should see huawei splash screen but will stay like that) then install the huawei drivers

After that while phone is still in fast boot go in to unlock tools folder and choose unlock bootloader then enter your 16 digit unlock code after that is done if your phone reboots put back in to fastboot mode when its in fastboot choose flash recovery follow instructions it will flash latest TWRP then when that's flashed you can either flash a custom ROM of your choice or keep stock and gain root if you want root put the root zip on phone and flash then all done let me know if you encounter any problems also if you have win 7 run as admin

Also if you want a good ROM I would go with either CM10.1 or CM10.2 (I'm using CM10.2 and its flawless) then to flash its vol down and power keep hold to go in recovery then full wipe just press wipe then slide then back out and go install

Right, unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP.

Was about to flash the SU zip but wondering whether I need to do this if I'm gonna install a custom ROM?

Is CM 10.2 completely bug free? 'All' I want is improved performance, stability, and good battery life. CM10.2 is 4.3 isn't it? that would be nice, but want to know it will be completely bug free...

Thanks loads for your help. :)

If your flashing CM10.2 you don't need to flash the root file just wipe and flash also you need 4.3 GAPPS CM10.2 has great battery and gets updated pretty much everynight its highly stable only bug so far is HW acceleration (you get green bar in videos and in YouTube only on HQ)

Ah, might skip that then. I know it might seem picky, but I don't want any issues at all! Just want a ROM I can flash once and then not have to worry about. Backing up and reflashing is too time consuming to want to do it very often!

Is CM 10.1 more bug free?

Any other recommendations?

Cheers

Its only 1 bug also when updates out just download and flash no need to wipe just download and flash also don't have to download every update just when ever you want to download its OTA as well

Ok, sounds pretty good then actually, especially if updates are that easy!

I've installed FusionX at the moment. Maybe have a look at CM 10.2 tomorrow night!

Thanks again for all your help!

I think I'll edit my first post tomorrow so that is has all the relevant info there for any other users.
