New 3 Sim on Cyanogen 9 - No number in About phone & is this a suitable ROM

As is says above. I've put in a 3 PAYG sim, attracted by the low charges. I'm not sure whether I'm pleased with the change. Coverage was supposed to be OK at my location on 3G and Good on the Enhanced H systemThe mobile network type shown in 'About Phone - Status' is hunting between 3G and H, but that may be due to the geography round here. In looking around I noticed that in 'About Phone - Status' phone number is Unknown. I've seen by searching that it may be possible to correct that using another phone with the facility to modify the SIM. Is it possible to do on the G300?

Is there anything to be gained, performance wise, by changing the ROM? Is another ROM more suitable for use on the 3 network?

If anything is going to affect signal reception then I think it's more likely the baseband and RIL (Radio Interface Layer) rather than a ROM per se. However I don't know for sure. What baseband are you on? The IMEI SV in the About Phone should indicate the last official update.app applied which should also give a good idea of the RIL used. However don't go messing with/flashing RILs unless you really know what you're doing.

The About Phone > Status > My phone number can be changed in some or all CyanogenMod ROMs but I don't think that most others support this. However I have never noticed this causing problems when it is "unknown".

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response Dalyer,

I'm on baseband 2030 Andriod version 4.0.4, Kernel 3.0.8-cyanogenmod-00076-gd30b762, Cyanogenmod version 9-20130428-EXPERIMENTAL-u8815-R10.

I'm showing signal strength -113dBm 0asu  on mobile Network type UTMS:3 this morning. No bars on signal strength indicator.

The lack of phone number in about phone doesn't seem to have any effect on the correct number being shown other phones when I call or text.

I'll live with it for a while and investigate adding the phone number just for housekeeping purposes, unless there is likely to be major benefit in change.

What's your IMEI SV? It normally indicates the last official update.app and hence the RIL.

There are a couple of posts elsewhere on the site which map the IMEI SV codes to stock ROM versions (BXXX).

You could backup and try another ROM to see if there is any difference with signal. And restore the backup if not.

It's difficult to say if there is a problem here with signal reception and, if so, what's causing it.

Thanks  Dalyer. My IMEI SV is shown as 36. I've been trying to find the tables of IMEI SV code to ROM version without success so far using the site search function.

I have been out on my bike today, and on the hills that surround the town I am getting bars showing on the signal strength indicator, so looks like the geography is against me as I suspected.

The site search isn't great.

I find it better to just Google modaco g300 and whatever the search term is (e.g. IMEI SV).

Using this approach I found this again:

http://www.modaco.com/topic/357975-archive-ril-for-all-stock-based-ics-roms/page-4#entry2086534

So 36 = B936 and you probably have the RIL from that ROM.

Hope this helps.

Ah - I'm not so bad at searching, just gave up on page 3 of that thread before getting to the information I needed. And noticed that a poster had used the 'Explained like you're 5' guide to get to B936, so that's likely what I have. I don't think I did the official ICS update that gives B952.

Note to self - keep notes.

I think this is probably the end of this thread, until I have had a chance to try some other ROMs, then I'll come back with more questions.

Thanks for the education Dalyer
