Sony have announced the Xperia Z2 as their new flagship device replacing the Z1 announced back at IFA in September. This is another fairly incremental update but with some important changes nonetheless.

Most significantly, the screen has been enlarged to 5.2" and in the process Sony have decided to finally put some decent tech into their mobile display. It is a Full HD TRILUMINOS unit with Live Colour LED powered by X-Reality. Most importantly, it is an IPS display. This all adds up to one of the best displays we have seen recently with fantastic brightness, colour reproduction and viewing angles. Finally Sony have cracked it.

Despite the larger screen, the Z2 body is very slightly narrower and thinner than the Z1 though a tad taller. The in-hand feel is fantastic though, very refined.

Inside, there is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC running at 2.3Ghz, 3Gb of RAM and an impressively large 3200mAh battery.

There are dual stereo speakers above and below the screen and it features updated noise cancelling technology too.

On the camera side, the basic sensor and lens setup are the same as on the Z1 and Z1 Compact, with a 20.7 megapixel sensor topped with a Sony G-Lens. Sony have promised software enhancements to this already impressive camera and we have crossed our fingers that they have finally cracked the processing of images taken with their flagship devices. Video can now be captured in 4K and we saw one such video being played on a Sony 4K TV which looked stunning.

Hi James,

Besides the slightly bigger screen, slight bump in processor terms, slight bump in battery and 50% jump in RAM, and assuming as you mentioned that the software updates will be sent down to the older Z1 and Z1 compact models, Would you go for the Z1 or the new Z2?

Have fun over there!

Eddie
