Can I upgrade a hudl to android 4.3 or 4.4?

I'm contemplating rooting my hudl as I want the 'restricted user' ability added in android 4.3, as well as getting rid of the [T] and tesco bloatware.

However, it's not clear if I can force update my hudl to 4.3 or 4.4 if I do root it.

I'm a .NET developer, and I'm familiar with linux, but only from an install and use point of view. I've never compiled it or dug into the kernel at all.

I would be willing to spend the time to do it if it was possible.

Has anybody done this, or would I be better buying a hudl2 or other tablet with a later android version on it?

Thanks

there's no rom (comparable in a way to a linux distro) above 4.2.2 - I believe we're missing some of the hardware sources to be able to compile a version of 4.3 or 4.4 for it ourselves, though my understanding may be slightly wonky on that.

there may be another way to acheive a restricted user type environment, what are you aiming to do?

I'm wanting to restrict my daughters user account more than it is.

She doesn't have access buy stuff through the play store, but when she's playing some of her games and accidently hits the adverts it takes her to the internet.

She's only 2, she gets distressed when her game goes away and she doesn't know how to get it back yet.

I have a Nokia Windows phone that has a kids area that prevents internet use, and I was hoping the android restricted user would be similar.

She doesn't use the tablet or phone often, but I do give it to her to keep her quiet for 5 mins.

What would happen if I put a stock 4.3 or 4.4 ROM on the hudl?

Would it just refuse to work, or would some of the hardware features like the camera not work?

Short answer - It won't work.

Long answer - Much like a pc, every android device has it's own hardware components (CPU, GPU, Camera, Screen, etc) that make up the system; without the correct drivers, the PC OS won't function. Unlike a PC OS, the android OS has to be compiled with the "drivers" as part of the OS for that device before it can be installed. There are no "generic" drivers that will function on every android device, so no, you can't just install any old rom on the Hudl without it having been specificly compiled with the Hudl in mind. At this time, I believe it's the screen hardware driver or something related that is preventing anyone from compiling a 4.3 or 4.4 rom for the Hudl. Bottom line, you're stuck with 4.2.2.

Is you're device rooted? For the situation you're in, perhaps you could install an adblocker app of some kind? Adaway or minminguard via Xposed perhaps?

It's not rooted yet, but if I can get an adblocker installed by rooting, then I'll give that a go.

Thanks :)
