Half Life 3 confirmed? Not quite, but an equally unlikely event has occurred - HTC is getting into VR with the new HTC Vive.

Yes, really.

The Vive developer edition will be available in the next few months with the full consumer edition launching in time for the 2015 holiday season. The Vive is powered by Steam VR and combines the system's VR tracking and input tech with HTC's famous design and engineering chops to attempt to bring VR to the masses. If anyone can do it... Valve can with Steam?

Cher Wang, Chairwoman of HTC states:

It’s rare that a company has an opportunity to forever transform the ways in which people interact with the world and communicate with each other but that is exactly what we plan to do with Valve.

Peter Chou, CEO of HTC likens the possible VR revolution to the advent of Smartphones themselves...

We achieved this once before with our development of smartphone technology. And, through our partnership with Valve, we’ll now be doing this for a second time with VR technology of which consumers could only previously dream.

Vive is said to offer the most immersive experience of any VR package courtesy of a concept called 'Full Room Scale', expanding the area of interaction considerably compared to rivals (such as, of course, Facebook's Oculus Rift). HTC and Valve are also working on a unique solution allowing you to stand up, walk around and explore your virtual space, inspecting objects from every angle.

The kit is powerful too, with high resolution graphics, 90 frames per second video and hi-fi audio. HTC is offering unique VR controllers - sold as a pair - and designed to work with a range of VR experiences and accessible to gamers and non-gamers alike.

Developer support is already considerable, with content coming from some of the world’s top game developers including Vertigo Games, Bossa, Barry –Fireproof, Dovetail Games, Wemo Labs, Google, Steel Wool Games and Owlchemy.

HTC are keen to emphasis that Vive isn't just about gaming - there will be a wide range of experiences to appeal to all sorts of people.

We will be trying the kit this week, so we'll let you know how we get on.

Pricing and availability is TBC.
