Hudl2 and network shares

Hi. I recently bought a Hudl2 to set up a media player for the house and I'd like to mount music and video shares using cifs or nfs. So far the device is rooted and running nicely but seems to have no modules for nfs or cifs.

I have Unsuccesfully built the cifs kernel module and cant get it to load (this may well be terminal noobism ). I'd like to be able to just select and play files ( or add to a playlist) so I'm not looking to use an app to copy the files to the Hudl.
If anyone has suggestions that will let me mount the network shares I'm all ears otherwise its time to sell the tablet and buy a different one.

I don't pretend to know what cifs or nfs are, but there is an app that can be found in the play Store that claims to turn your device into a media centre, it's called Plex...maybe worth a look. It's available in free or premium editions. Here's a link to the Plex forums https://forums.plex.tv/

Hi,

I second the recommendation for plex. You install a app on a server box somewhere (also available for some NAS's i believe), and the client app (which is pretty cheap) works great on Hudl. Also can work on Chromecast as well.

To answer your original question though, ive found that using ES File Explorer allows me to browse my SMB shares (buffalo terrastation in this case runing samba) and that if you open them, they play correctly in MX Player. Im not sure how it does this - it starts too quickly for it to be copying the entire file over, so it must be streaming somehow.

Ive just tested on my hudl 2 and it works great

EDIT: This is all WITHOUT root btw

cheers

I did think about a streaming server and I tried a few dlna setups but id like to be able to use a few other devices on the network.

Take a look at kodi or xbmc for android, this will also turn your device into a full blown media centre. Quickpic will also allow you access to samba shares so you can view pictures and videos. There are also a few music players that can play over samba. For music I found the easiest option was to let google play music scan all of mine as it now allows you to store 50000 tracks in your google account.

Another plus 1 for the plex setup runs great on the Hudl and if you set the server up properly you can even access your media away from home

also there is a great hack to turn a £10 now tv box into a client so you can do most of the tv's in the house as well ( subject to the number of devices you can register to now tv)

Thanks. I have looked at it more and Plex or another streaming server isnt what I'm after. Im still looking for a way to mount network shares so I can use my existing file structure.

Take a look at Kodi for android, that will let you use your existing file structure via cifs. The easy way to install it is via xbmc updater in the play store.

As a side note, Root Explorer by Speed Software (available on the Play Store) is able to browse SMB shares, it can also access Google Drive, Dropbox and Box.

As I said though. I was looking for a way to mount smb shares so I could access them. I can already access them using apps and file managers. Now I use Kodi or BS player to play music but kodi is a bit clunkier than I want and bs player isnt right either. Ideally I'd still like to mount the share into the filesystem but there doesn't seem to be cifs/smb or NFS support in the kernel or as modules.
