I don't know about anyone else but i get really frustrated sometimes with the Main Forum, the amount of people cross posting and not searching, i mean. Is it possible for persistant offenders to get a Warning? Could we have the offending threads removed instead of locked? (Obviously a PM or Email to the author first(otherwise they just post again saying "wheres my post gone").

Also, if people persistantly post non-constructive comments and are rude or obtrusive can we get them banned or warned?

Lastly, about the Warning system, how does this work? ie i presume it's so many Warnings and your out, How many? When currently are Warnings issued? (I've noticed people who shout get Warnings).

Thanks for your time and patients.

Richie M.

PS was going to make this a poll - what do you reckon?

There's no point in removing the offending posts as there is no evidence/past posts for newbies to "see". It would be fairly hard to enforce as well (unless it's very obvious...), maybe when the new news page comes up it will have a big red "search" button at the top :)

Yeah i forgot to say not including the Newbie Forum. I realise it would be fairly hard to enforce, but i do feel that this becoming a prob & don't really like using (havent yet) the report to a Mod button.

A good example is Pippins recent post in Main asking for a International Dialing Code! I mean come on this aint Directory Enquiries is it?

(The majority of Pippins thread now deleted)

It can be a problem and some members are getting very frustrated.

It can be very hard to mod crossposts but when we see obvious ones we do act

and correct it if we can.

a good example is when the UK update came the site was overwhelmed with very similar problems not cross posts but duplicate ones by different members.

No ones fault these things just happen.

instead of every one trying to keep it in one place.

There were so many posts that i did not have chance to read them all, making my job as a mod very hard.

This is just one of the things that happen with a very popular site with over 3000 members.

we might find a way to keep everyone happy, but it may take time.

At the end of the day everyone have fun and enjoy the site, you have all made it the success it is to day.

I'd be up for modding too; I seem to end up reading every post there is anyway!

Someone suggested letting newbies post only in beginners for a couple of weeks or until they had a certain no. of posts so that they could get used to the forum, which would hopefully reduce the number of duplicate threads (everywhere except in beginners anyway!) I know I get stressed every time I read the main or software forum and yet another person has posted a "why can't I show a picture when someone calls me like on my T68" type thread  Think we need to add something about it to the news page - there is no caller to picture app dammit!

I second you on that Andy. Its really annoying to read the same stuff over and over again.

On another note, a mate just bought the SPV and I forwarded him to MODACO. The poor guy was looking for some ringtone info and ended up reading some 200+ posts without gettin anywhere.

The point i was trin to make is that the forum needs to sorted and it wud be much helpful to newbies if we cud have a WHATS AVAILABLE kinda section. Something like Monolithx's site and also if we cud STICKY all the tutorials etc.

And plz can we have a feature where newbies cant post to main for a month or something?

Cheers

Cas

I agree, i was thinking on the same lines as Andy, i always look in the Newbie section still just to see if there is anyone i can help, i do think Newbies should be limited; how about they can browse all forums but only post in Newbie? And have a sticky "Please search before postin".

Cas, maybe a Whats Not & What Is Available?

Mono. - please dont think i was knocking the Mods, think they do a great job under the circumstance, this is what happens when a Forum gets popular :) i just think that we all need to muck and make sure MoDaCo is still useful & helpful to everyone!

Thankx - Richie.

PS Agree with Cas, more Mods; I vote for Casper508, Amo & HelloDave. Maybe it could be done on an invatation based user stats (not just posts) ie topics viewed and contents of posts (i say this as there is one member(think he is still a Newbie) who posts quite a bit with unconstrutive posts (to be honest he really p1$$3s me off with his comments) - soz Rant over ;)

Guest HelloDave

I think someone (DJHope?) was having a go at a FAQ, but i'm not sure how far he got with it - I haven't heard any news for a while. Finding information, even with a search, can be difficult for newbies because there is so much info on this forum now, and we could do with a FAQ of some sort. I personally am inclined to be a lot nicer in the Beginner's forum than anywhere else - hence why I get really annoyed when yet another "caller to picture" thread pops up in main or software (sorry - pet hate!). Only problem is I don't know how easy it would be to implement an "allow newbies to post in all forums after two weeks" type system in phpBB.

I vote for Casper508, Amo & HelloDave

I'm flattered

Jeez, I'm an idiot  i always thought, until now, that Mono was a Mod, only just realised cos i wanted to PM a mod and looked in the list and couldn't find him  Doh!

Mono would be my first choice as a new Mod then and i did forget about DJHope  Basically everyone I've mentioned would make great Mods IMHO.

Just to add to the warnings question...

Usually the warnings are given for serious misconduct (continuously talking about piracy) - not for shouting. You won't normally see the offending post as it's deleted or edited. As far as I know, members are pm'ed if they majorly break the rules once, and warned if they continue to do so.

I do believe something happens to the user if they get ten warnings...

Paul, mainly because MoDaCo is getting so big, i think it'd be benificial to everyone.

If you look at the Stats the man guys in this thread are in the Top 10 Time and Posts, especially Mono.

Compare them to the current Mod total posts, espec. Mark, Gears & Florin; I know Gears & Florin are busy else where - which is why i think more Mods would help.

Personally I would agree to most things said. There is no permanent or 100% working solution. We do act on most crossposts and things like that. The best solution so far to that is posting a link to the _original_ thread and locking the topic. Deleting could result in repeated posting of same qstns etc.

Naming the posts accordingly to actual topic subject would be helpful and adding ?-mark if it is a question rather than a solution would be helpful. But these issues are something that members should pay attention to in the first place. Mods are quite often very limited as to what can be done about these things. But we try do our best :)

PS: This is a *very* friendly & democratic forum and I think it should stay that way - the "posting culture" of members is something that should be looked into, but we can't really impose things on people as you understand...

  • 1 year later...

I agree mostly, the site has become huge! After a couple of weeks away, I have no idea of how to begin searching for what I've missed. After a few days, my portal says like 1800 posts since last visit, so after 2 weeks its virtually impossible. But that just shows what a great website has been built up here. I can't imagine there is a 100% working solution to cross posting or daft posting, but I think it may be a bit harsh to limit newbies posting too much - I know when I first started here, I had to spend a few days posting about stuff to get my phone working. The search function is great, but it can often return so many threads that its hard to find what you are looking for.

Personally, the thing that gets me the most is when people post a question without a question mark in the thread title. Eg 'Free GPRS counter' - I think woohoo, new free software, but it's just someone asking if there is one or not. Now that really makes me mad ... :)

lol where did you dig this thread up from ?

maybe paul could restructure the portal so the first 5 storys are displayed as at present, then say the next 10 titles are displayed also.

I know what you mean about the shear number of posts when you go away for a while. Ive been real busy last few weeks but try to read almost every post :/

Must admit i occasionally resort to mark all topics read :/

:) Dug this up on my endless quest to find out whats been going on in my absence!

For me, the best thing would be to be able to select which forums appear in the portal 'posts since last visit'. At least then you could filter out forums/posts which are not relevant.

I have to say I quite often have trouble with search in that I get no results found. It might just be me being thick, but if so maybe there needs to be a clearer explanation of how to use search.

The mods here seem to do a great job. I would/will volunteer to help out but I'm a browser rather than someone who can give answers so not sure that I would really be much help!

I am always checking to see what's happening so could possibly help out.

hmm old thread...i agree the search on here isnt very good (i think this is to do with the forum engine used phpbb?) normally if you get no results returned you need to be less specific, dont have as many search terms.

On a similar topic, one thing that used to annoy me was how the pinoy people post a thread with an english title and then write the message in thier language...makes looking for things more frustrating, so i like your idea dr blow, would mean you could filter out the pinoy forum :)

I think you are missing the point zeta101

this site is a multi-national site and we have specific sections where people can express themselves in their own language

and may be get the point across in a better way.

You can search by sections on the site so filter out as such.

Hi zeta. What do you mean "filter the Pinoy forum" may I ask?

I happen to be Pinoy and I use the Search engine of Modaco more often so I dont think the "pinoy forum" or even the Dansk or Nederlands forum have to be filtered out. Anyway if you use the Search and you get the list of results, you can simply ignore those that are from the Pinoy Forum since you can distinguish it from the list.

Its just that we sometimes feel comfortable to speak to each other on our langauge but anyhow we still speak English in general. I hope you understand. Still, if a non-Pinoy would ask or post something in that forum, we can readily reply to him/her in English. You can always call our attention to speak English if you need to understand our conversation...that wouldnt be a problem for us

but totally filter it out? ummm... I dont think so :)
