The only time it shows up is when you select a contact and hit left/right to change it to sms (other options avail: h/h2/m/www...) Then hit Action and that will take you to New>SMS. Then a character counter should appear on top.... Cheekely, from cheeky -> Clever. Sly? (like a fox?)
