Past handheld device before SPV

Hi guys,

I have been playing around with my SPV for a while now, and i was wondering what handheld device did you guys own before the SPV (or still use along with SPV).

I use too many devices (due to my job) to be objective, so my opinion is biased. But what stuff do you miss from your former PDA or phone?

I myself miss enhance PIM functionalities a lot.

Any thoughts?

now that I have a File Explorer and Task Manager on my SPV, the only thing I miss is the larger screen of my Jornada (which I now no longer use)...

I had a Palm IIIx, and I miss Omni Remote and another piece of software for keeping track of my bank account and credit cards.

But it couldn't play music!

i've had a palm pilot, psion 5, franklin rex, ipaq and nokia 8210 (and perhaps some i forget!)

I loved the keyboard on the Psion 5, but now i've got the fabric keyboard, which is cute but not as usable, but it fits in my pocket.

The Franklin rex was and still is a killer form factor (pcmia card!) but it's dated now, and surpassed by a consolidated phone+pda=SPV. But still, for moving address book/calendar around, reading books on a tiny screen, and for even bigger novelty value than the spv, the REX is still great.

IPAQ: took it out yesterday. I haven't used it in a while, because it's frankly ridiculously big with the compactflash jacket, and i can't be bothered to buy a more recent one because now i've got the spv, i can do most of what i need to on here.

But, the screen space is nice, stylus is useful (but i would rather use a nipple joystick then the P800, such an ugly b*****d), so i can live without a stylus/touch screen in this form factor. (and who wants to use two hands to make a phone call?)

8210: fine for calendar and alarms and some contacts, but frankly, SPV kicks ass. but slim and lasts an age.

on the whole, spv is best device i've used on balance...

But if anyone wants to send me more devices to trial/beta: i'm experienced and an uber-geek :)

I has an SL45, which was great back in the day (MMC, MP3, Dictaphone, Outlook, etc..).

I still use it but only when i'm out on the piss and i don't want to risk breaking my SPV in a drunken collision with a lampost.

Never had a palm or anything of that kind. I had a 3330 before my SPV. Do I miss it? NOOOOO!

I don't think I'll get a palm or the like for the simple reason that if I can keep needed things on my phone I don't have to mess around with lots of different hardware. It's also easier to look after one bit of equipment, especially in the pub.

The SPV suits my requirements at the moment and the technology will improve to incorporate more in the future.

Hey Nghia :)

I have a Jornada 658 and T68i as my previous device, which I dumped for the SPV :(

I've had a whole host of Nokias before that...

Who's PIM?

I had a Palm and an Ericsson but the idea of carrying 2 things around always seemed like a waste to me, I was only too glad to get rid of the Palm and the SPV does tons more than the two combined

Did someone mention PIM functionality?

Keep your eyes open, it's on the way.

I'm all ears out. Save my life and tell me more :)

My SPV is missing some PIM features :(

Yes .. a decent PIM program is on the horizon! (meant to be getting a beta version soon ..)

Hola Nghia - nice to see you in these parts! :)

Before the SPV I had a T68 and an iPAQ. Still have the iPAQ though gave my T68 to the bf. I currently still use my iPAQ for reading AvantGo and using Pocket Informant. Oh, and also Journal Bar for the cool weather forecast. And reading eBooks. And viewing photos at a decent size. And taking notes (sorry, but the lack of support for custom words in the smartphone's T9 implementation really sucks). And listening to MP3s and WMAs using PocketMusic (support for WinAMP skins, presets and visualisations is way cooller than crappy windows media player) and also creating word and excel documents.

I think my SPV is very cool. But it's low amount of ROM (constantly running out of memory even though most everything's installed to a storage card), small screen size and crappy input options means that it can't take over all of the functions that my Pocket PC provided. Additional software will handle some of my requirements, but the hardware constraints of the SPV limit it's use for other things.

I had a Psion MX 5 which I really only used to connect to my GPS when I had to find my way around London when I had to drive there. Just ordered a Dell Axim X5 performance to go along with my SPV. Nice thing about it is that I can get a cable to connect to the GPS and I already have the mapping software (TomTom route planner and city planner have Psion, PPC and palm versions on the CDs :) )
