Full Hands Free Car Kit - First Impressions

Not sure how many of you have got the full hands free car kit yet but here's some info for those that have one on order.

Mine is now fitted and tested and I'm extremely disappointed with it.

Firstly although the quality of the electronics and DSP stuff is high and speech reception is good the general build quality is awful, very tacky plastic compared to Nokia etc, nice bright Orange release button! It also rattles when driving as the bracket is weak and flimsy.

There is no radio mute, almost unheard of on a modern day car kit but according to the posts on Ora's site this is common - I'm afraid not, it is certainly not an option on Nokia, Panasonic, Ericsson etc it is included so why not on this as it is supposed to be an advanced phone.

Also the phone has some issues when in the car kit, you cannot set the display light to stay on without changing it in the menu every time i.e. back light is off in the car - very unhelpful at night, this should be in the profile settings.

You cannot have different ring tones in the car, they are fixed globally and not in the profiles as they should be.

The design of the cradle means that with prolonged use the type of connector and guide lines will scratch the phone around the connector area and on the front, this will make the phone look tack after a while.

And that little lot is just after half a day.

I'd be interested to know if what other users thoughts are on this one.

Disapointed, I'd be furious!

I've been waiting for a proper review, and failing to get anywhere with ORA. Pity you had to spend money to discover it's not up to scratch :)

Was there a wiring diagram with it? or is it all plug and play leads?

(ie is there no way to modify it to fit a stereo?)

As to profile problems, I suggest you embrace IRC, and come chat to Midnight on the #Smartphone channel, he's found several tweaks that may help you.

I'd still like to see one of thse kits (in the tacky flesh that is).. If you wouldn't mind showing it off, gimme a PM

Will,

A Wiring diagram!! lets just say I suggest anyone that is not sure what there doing with a car's electrics doesn't fit it themselves!!! I'm used to car audio/phones etc so no problem but I have to say the manual has got to be the worst I've seen, it does have some pictures but they are not brilliant - still given the distinct lack of features there's not much to connect up anyway!!!

As for the phone mute, there is some pins in the main plug that do appear to be connected to the main board so I'm going to meter these out and see if it does at least have support for a mute even if it's not connected.

I have spoken to Midnight before but I don't remember any tweaks along these lines, is there some new stuff I missed?

And your right I am pretty furious at £149 especially as the forum on Ora says a phone mute is an option on most kits!!! I challange Ora to see how many of the top ten phone manufacturers do not include a raido mute wire.

Darrell.

I fogot to mention there is also a really loud beep to let everyone within 100 meters of the car know you've just plugged your phone in!!!
