This'll be the authoritative thread for PocketCandy, I noticed the subject of the Matrix one did change, but it'll be easier to just update this post/thread with new info.

The latest Beta can be downloaded at one of the following links:

http://www.haxware.co.uk/PocketCandy.sp_arm.CAB

http://www.spv.forevertwisted.co.uk/downloads.html

http://www.bigjb.co.uk/~dstring/pages/Scre...ensavers/pc.htm

http://motbe.coolcomputing.net/ce/beta.php (if using this link, please don't pass it out because it is my main web site's beta software page. I'd appreciate less Beta software getting shared around before this app is final. Also, please don't link to that page from your site. Thanks!)

6/7 Update

New Cab files posted to my site. These cabs should (cross my fingers) fix the issues that people have been having with the startup setting (thanks to the person who gave me the tip about IA Style's similar problems), having it start up automatically, and also fix the issues with reminders popping up. Also included is a "Decay Screen" screensaver, which just distorts the current image on your screen. The Mirror sites should be updated soon (my site, www16.brinkster.com/motbe/ is currently up to date.)

To determine if you've got the latest cab file, you can check that its date is 6/7/2003 (which it will display the date when you try to install it)

5/29 Update

I've whipped up another screensaver that I coded for the PocketPC a while back, but never released.. I'm not totally sure of the legal aspects of using the images included, but the company doesn't exist as such any more, and I think the license belongs to a company who doesn't really market the product any more. Anyhow, you'll recognize it from the screenshot below. There's no cab file for this one. Just unzip to the ScreenSavers dir for PocketCandy (ensure both files go in there).

One note about dismissing the screensaver (which I'm posting here because of being asked several times about it.

Just use the two keys (left soft key and #) as you would normally to unlock, even though u can't see what you're doing and then hit the left soft key once more, that should stop it, i find that no other key stops the screensavers but the left soft key.
It should be possible to use any key to dismiss the screensaver, but potentially that's not the case here.

All the screensavers work a treat! Well done, but I'm fairly sure, over the few tests I've made, that the reminder pop-up bug is still alliiiive!

I don't any reminders, before I touch a button and the screensaver goes off...

Hi motbe!

I think you're the star of the moment! This screensaver apps of yours are just great.

Question: How do I "completely" un-install the previous version of Pocket Candy? Will the "Remove Programs" option be enough?

I want to download the latest updated version, but I want to be careful not to "foul-up" on the un-installation.

motbe, thanks for this nice app.

Question: when I leave the screensaver (particularly Matrix) on for quite long, I cant get it to stop.....tried pressing all keys of the phone, it still keep on running, cant get to my homescreen. Only option is to remove the battery/ restart the phone. How can I make it stop then?

thanks...

Smart Explorer has zip support...

But this doesn't allow you to download zip files from the web. Only .cab's can be directly downloaded. There's a discussion elsewhere about whether this could be achieved with some sort of Registry hack, to allow PIE to handle file types other than .cab

thanks for explaining for me, yeah pie wont even download exe files. it would be good if there was a reg hack. However, a cab posted here or on motbe's site would help. i may get a chance to get home on the weekend but cant wait to see these ssavers!

heelman, read in original thread...

You can place the screensavers in any location you like, but you'll need let PocketCandy know what directory they're in so it can find them. To do that you can make a change to the Registry:

Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareStrickland ConsultingPocketCandy

Value:

Screen Saver Dir

If you've run the configuration app already, you'll find that that value's already filled with the "windows" directory. But you can change it to anything you like.

Hmm.. I'll have to look into that reminder thing again.

jabez: As far as completely removing the old version, just go into the "PocketCandy Settings", and then select "" as your screensaver (that'll shut everything down that's part of PocketCandy). Then you can just use the normal "Remove Programs" that's part of settings. The new version of the install will do that for you, I just didn't include that functionality in there the first time around.

neilfenstein: I'd post a Cab file up on my site, but Brinkster doesn't let any downloads go that aren't zipped. I'll be posting information about a mirror location later on today, so on there I should have the cab file directly downloadable.

dinoalbert: That's strange.. Pressing any key on the phone won't dismiss the screensaver? I'll see if I can find something in my code tonight that would be locking the phone like that.

heelman: Which storage location did you have it install PocketCandy to? I'm not certain I've nailed all the bugs down with installing it to anything other than the main storage on the phone itself.

@motbe yes it wont dismiss but I just found out why....keylock is activated in the background so to stop the screensaver, although I cant see it because the screensaver is always on top, I just need to press the left soft key and then the # key

motbe;

Here are a few things to maybe think about in a later version.

When somebody calls i have found out that the screensaver does not shut down by itself. I can still answer though by pressing left softkey, however it is still annoying.

Also upon resuming to the home screen, a password protect would be great. That will keep curious noses out of my stuff.

Great work though!!! :) :(

I'm working on the call problem. I've tried one solution, and the next build I'll try my other idea. Hopefully that one fixes the problem.

This is probably the biggest suggestion that I get from PocketCandy users on the PocketPC. I've got a few ideas, and am part way through implementing them on that platform, but I'll need to do some research first before I start to code a solution like that on the SmartPhone. We'll see though. First I need to get these initial bugs worked out!

You're a GENIUS!!! this is brilliant.....

What I would really like though is for the screensaver to reactivate the backlight when it first comes on so that you can see it properly.

Much appreciated....

EDIT:

Is there anyway of setting it up so that the backlight stays on when the phone is on the cradle but off when on battery?? This would make it that much better :)

cheers

You could edit registry settings to do that, but if you have PocketMVP, you could use that to turn backlight ON and then OFF - that's manual though...

@motbe if you feel like taking this up, PM me and I'll point you to the right registry locations...

Right folks, a bit of a slow turnaround and sorry for that, but have finally got motbe's files hosted (in agreement with motbe!) - they were e-mailed to me just before I went to bed last night and I've not been back to my PC until now

Also, I'd left a test file there for my own purposes, just make sure everything worked ok, so if any of you downloaded that, you'll have found that it doesn't work (just testing my html as not fiddled with websites much before!) Again, sorry.

Anyways, all up now so feel free to download motbe's work from: here and here
