Hi just got a SPV, also got a old PocketPC so this is what tempted me to the SPV, video and MP3/WMA on a phone - cool!!?!?

questions I have though (sorry may be obvious but not to me!)

1) can you insert & remove the SD/MMC card when the phone is switched on? how do you know it is not accessing anything? on the PocketPC you have to switch the unit off before inserting/removing a SD/MMC card

2) I know its supposed to manage memory automatically, (so is the PocketPC but that goes to a crawl) can you close stuff manually? is there a way to or use a new program to download?

3) what are the best things/apps to have on your SPV? I'm dieing to show off a video! and MP3's.

4) has any1 got IA album 1.6, which you can use to use the camera as a video? (this was the killer app for me to buy,I saw the Nokia 3650 and it was cool!) how long can you record is it only dependable on the memory card? whats the frame rate you get? I want to buy this but would prefer an opinion first.

5) I've only used the camera once but it seems to have a slow update, is this normal?

another few...

6) I want to download some pictures to my SPV, what size/resolution should I make them for the best view in Picture manager? also is there any help files in smartphone eg with sound manager/picture manager

7) can I just plug in and out the camera whenever? don't I need to stop anything etc first? or is it OK to plug it in and out when I want without damaging it.

8) polyphonic ring tones, does the SPV use/support them, if not what can I use for better sounds? all my mates have new colour phones but with cool sounds, I haven't (or haven't found them yet!) please help, my defence at the minute is videos ah ha, beat that boys!!

9) there seems to be a thin film over the screen & SPV logo, is this removable? if so has any1 removed it, or is it a good idea to leave it on to protect the screen.

anyway I'll have a lot more questions later I'm sure, hope you can help

thx

1. Changing the SD while the phones on doesn't seem to damage it.

2. Task Manager

3. Have a brouse through software, and search for matrix trailers. There's a lot of freeware around.

5. Indeed it is, sadly. It's something to do with the connection with the spv, and I believe theres little that can be done about it!

And of course, welcome to Modaco!

10) there seems to be a thin film over the screen & SPV logo, is this removable? if so has any1 removed it, or is it a good idea to leave it on to protect the screen

11) I cannot connect to Activesync, ,my cable is plugged in, XP regonised it as a HTC device and installed drivers, downloaded Activesync 3.7 from MS, put phone in cradle etc, but AS will not connect using USB, any help please as I can't do much without this

4) Don't count on it. Although IA album makes a good attempt at recording video it is severly limited in frame rate by the serial interface the camera uses.

7) yea fine, no problesm there. Just make sure you dont lose it like I did.

8)Polyphonic MIDIs are not supported. Your salvation comes in the form of WAV files, so you can infact have ANYTHING you like as a ringtone.

11) Did you install activesinc while the spv was in the cradle? If so this is a big no no. Remove activesinc, and reinstall it without the spv in the cradle.

Nope, no problems whatsoever when inserting card with it switched on (in fact, all pocketpc's i've seen dont mind this either)

2) I know its supposed to manage memory automatically, (so is the PocketPC but that goes to a crawl) can you close stuff manually? is there a way to or use a new program to download?

As mentioned, there is a task manager availble

3) what are the best things/apps to have on your SPV? I'm dieing to show off a video! and MP3's.

Pocketmvp or pockettv for video apps, also, check out monolithix.org for other freeware apps, or check my site in my sig for a few surprises to stuff up those nokia users :)

4) has any1 got IA album 1.6, which you can use to use the camera as a video? (this was the killer app for me to buy,I saw the Nokia 3650 and it was cool!) how long can you record is it only dependable on the memory card? whats the frame rate you get? IA Album frame rate is pretty poor i'm afraid for video, cos of the naff serial port connection. And yeh, i think it's dependant on sd card size, so theoretically large (bad quality) movies could be made.

5) I've only used the camera once but it seems to have a slow update, is this normal?

Yeh, as mentioned above, bad frame rate.

6) I want to download some pictures to my SPV, what size/resolution should I make them for the best view in Picture manager? also is there any help files in smartphone eg with sound manager/picture manager

full screen on the spv is 176 x 220, but, the menu's are at the bottom that are 20 pixels (so that cuts it down to 176 x 200 in most apps) and if theres a top bar aswell, thats another 20 pixels lost (so thats 176 x 180)

7) can I just plug in and out the camera whenever? don't I need to stop anything etc first? or is it OK to plug it in and out when I want without damaging it.

Yep, same as sd card, you can plug in/take out the camera whenever you wish without causing any damage.

polyphonic ring tones, does the SPV use/support them, if not what can I use for better sounds? all my mates have new colour phones but with cool sounds, I haven't (or haven't found them yet!) please help, my defence at the minute is videos ah ha, beat that boys!!

Screw polyphonic, put some wavs on yer phone as ringers, proper actual music as your ringtone, not naff sounding beepy midi tones :(

9) there seems to be a thin film over the screen & SPV logo, is this removable? if so has any1 removed it, or is it a good idea to leave it on to protect the screen.

Err, up to you really, i peeled it off, that kind of protective film comes with most devices with a screen (all watches i've bought have had it)

hope this helps

> 1) can you insert & remove the SD/MMC card when the phone is switched on?

Yes, and I do the same with Pocket PCs and I have no problem. If an app has a file opened on the SD that you remove, the next "read" will cause an error. Applications that are correctly designed will handle the read error correctly.

> 2) I know its supposed to manage memory automatically, (so is the PocketPC but that goes to a crawl) can you close stuff manually? is there a way to or use a new program to download?

This topic has been extensively discussed. The problems are caused by applications that are not correctly implemented. See http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=63182 and http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...er=asc&start=30

Killing applications with a task manager can also create problems, if the task manager is not doing what it should (see http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=63590 ).

I recommend to turn your phone OFF and ON again. Turning the phone OFF will cause all running applications to terminate gracefully.

well if you're doing an I/O on the card that is accessing the file allocation table, you could end up damaging your card. not phsyically, but logically, i.e. if your card was 128MB before, you might end up with 32MB usable and the rest can no longer be accessed....

I suppose it's true, but 99.9% of the times, when you use a Storage Card on a device it's to read files (e.g. play music, video...). In that case there is no risks.

I always try to wait for all "write" accesses to complete before I pop a storage card :)

hehehe, come on, that just takes a bit of common sense, i'm sure the loc-man has enough sense to wait until any write access has finished (this has been the same with any media on the pc/other computers for many many years)
