how could warranty be void if you unlock your sap just by using a software? is there a statement in the warranty card that if you unlock or tinker wjth the phone via software, you void the warranty?

 Smart won't even know about it, unless you tell them. So go ahead, if something goes wrong while doing it or if something comes up after that will make your phone unusable, just make sure you have a Smart SIM in your phone when you give it to Smart for diagnosis. I believe they won't even attempt to insert a Globe SIM and try to check if your phone is unlocked.

i believe someone posted in the pinoy thread befor that SMART won't honor the warranty since the phone was unlocked. the person didn't tell them that it was unlocked. i guess it's SOP that they check if the phone has been unlocked.

This may be out of topic but intended to respond to @grifter's post.

I brought the SAP of my niece to the Wireless Center in Ayala because when I unsuccessfully installed a demo version of IA Caller ID (I didn't know she had very little memory left because even without an external storage, she loaded her phone with all that picture and music stuff) and it did not warn me of the danger of installing when the storage is low (there is another thread where I posted the details about this incident), all the STK service menu items disappeared and another application, SP Free Mem specifically, would no longer function (you select it and nothing happens).

So, when I was already with the CSR, she simply addressed my concern and never saw her insert a Globe SIM to check if my phone was unlocked. My case would have been a very good example of when to check for an unlocked phone because it might just be the cause of the disappearance of their proprietary STK servcies. What she did was to do a HARD RESET (I could have done it myself but decided to let them do it first) and checked the STK menu again. When the STK items were still not there, what she did was to insert my SMART SIM into her own SAP and when she found that the STK items were all there, decided to have my SAP replaced--WITH A NEW ONE--wow, that easy! Unfortunately or fortunately (I already stuck a screen protector in that phone), when she re-inserted my SIM in my SAP, the STK items re-appeared.

The point is, nowhere in the process did she check if my phone was unlocked or not. She was always at my front and I kept my eyes on her (maganda kasi--he he) so I could see what she was doing all the time. Siguro it is just like the US embassy (when you apply for a Visa), depends kung sino CSR (Consul for the Visa) ang haharap sa yo. If you are unlucky and your attending CSR does the checking as a standard operating procedure then, bye bye warranty (the Consul is meticulous--bye bye Visa).

If the loss of warranty is case to case basis, so does the need for the unlocking of the SAP, I think. I can cite myself as an example. I got the Addict 1335 package with a free phone but instead of using it, I gave the phone to my daughter who was using a Globe prepaid line while I used the Addict line with a previously purchased open-line P800. I could have had the phone unlocked so my daughter can still use her Globe prepaid with it but I chose to let her also have her Globe SIM swapped with a Smart SIM, it's free anyway.

There just might be people who got the Addict package and gave their SA phones to others while retaining and using the lines. The recipients of the phones who may be Globe die-hards will want to have their phones unlocked even at the risk of voiding the warranty.

again, everything is a case to case basis as i mentioned earlier.

if you're willing to risk voiding the warranty in exchange for having an open line SAP, then it's the users' decision.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to what the user considers more important -- the warranty or being able to use is on other networks.

Simply put, if you are using a Smart sim, dont unlock, dont take the risk. If you have a Globe sim, as much as possible use another phone (like the T68i im my case). But if you really want to use your Globe sim on the SAP OR if you dont have a spare phone and if you dont care much about the warranty, then go ahead and unlock. Just keep an open-mind that maybe or maybe not, Smart will find out that is was unlocked and thus void the warranty

Case-to-case nga lang talaga yan..... my officemate naman brought his Tanager to Smart Tower for a repair but somehow the CSR found out that it was unlocked...he said the CSR brought his phone inside a room and later came back and told him the bad news :D

cheers...

PS: you can insist that you didnt unlock it or maybe it was already unlocked when you bought it from them....diskarte mo na lang LOL...test your convincing skill

i agree to dinoalbert, my opinion is that since smart ang nag introduce ng SAP sa pinas they have all the resource to troubleshoot and configuration, but we never know baka a couple of months mag labas din ang globe.

OT: ive been a globe user for years but i didnt took the risk to mess around with the phone.

Fellas,

The SAP that is being released here, I think is already software unlocked. I tried running lots of uncertified softwares (including Doom ofcourse) on my SAP and they all installed well. They are only SIM locked not software locked. Some of my friends experienced this also, we didn't unlocked our SAP and yet we can install and run all the softwares that we loaded. So I don't know if where only lucky. I also had a long chat from one of SMART's CRS and she told me that, that is the case. If you will Sim unlocked your SAP, your warranty will be voided because that is tampering already with your SAP according to her and when it is overlooked the CRS is being laxed. The reason about the GPRS being not free is because of the SAP daw, since GLOBE is only a WAP browser, unlike the SAP which is a html browser. Well i don't know if there's any truth in here but i thought i might as well share it.

GPRS over WAP is free but the regular GPRS is not. The tanager can't used GPRS over WAP, yung mga low end WAP phones lang ang makakaaccess nito. Globe disabled it after the holy week of this year. Bad trip.

you can access wap pages via your SAP. just change the http:/ prefix to wsp:/

try going to wsp:/www.globe.com.ph/globe.wmlc

it's just that most wap sites are already being blocked by Globe for whatever its worth.

and don't forget to change your apn to www.globe.com.ph not internet.globe.com.ph so you won't be charged.
