Mitac International hopes its Mio-branded handsets will become “THE” high-end handset brand in China, said company chairman Francis Tsai.

Mitac recently made a foray into the world’s largest telecom market by partnering with Chinese Electronics Corporation Telecom (CECT), a local handset vendor. CECT currently handles marketing and distributing of CECT-Mio co-branded smartphones in China.

According to Tsai, the company will launch a branding campaign costing about 60 million to 70 million yuan and establish up to 20,000 retail channels throughout China to promote its smartphones.

The company plans to launch two more smartphone devices before the end of the year and expects monthly shipments to reach 50,000 units, contributing NT$1 billion (about US$29 million) in sales, according to Tsai. Both models will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows Powered Smartphone 2003 operating system, Tsai said. Current smartphone shipments stand at 15,000 units a month.

In addition to China, Mitac also markets its smartphone in Taiwan, working with Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), a local mobile phone carrier, and Synnex Technology International, Taiwan's largest 3C channel retailer. Tsai revealed that the company is talking with a handful of European and US wireless operators on future smartphone deals.
