ORANGE UNVEILS LATEST SIGNATURE PHONE - SPV E200 - AND REVEALS NEW SMARTPHONE USAGE RESEARCH

- Orange is first to launch Windows Mobile-based phone with integrated camera and Bluetooth

- New SPV to be showcased at ITU Telecoms Congress in Switzerland

- SPV E200 available to over 30m Orange customers in six countries

- Research shows SPV is most successful Orange phone in terms of non-voice usage

Geneva, Switzerland. Friday October 10th 2003. Orange and Microsoft today unveiled the latest phone in the Orange signature range - the SPV E200 - featuring familiar Windows mobile software and designed to give customers one touch access to key services, exclusive Orange services and making full use of the Orange intelligent network. The announcement comes as Orange and Microsoft release new data on Smartphone usage.

With an integrated digital camera and Bluetooth capabilities, the SPV E200 is one of the worlds most advanced mobile phones, packed with features to make Orange customers more efficient at work and offering more fun and entertainment for play. The SPV E200, with Windows Mobile 2003 software for Smartphones, allows customers to send and receive emails on the move using Pocket Outlook, access the internet using Pocket Internet Explorer, send photo messages, download MP3's and even film and store special moments with the integrated still and video camera.

As an Orange signature phone, it also comes with exclusive Orange services such as Orange Backup. Orange Backup allows customers to store their personal and business data - such as contacts and calendar - on the Orange network and restore those details when required. That means that if a customer loses their phone, the information remains secure on the Orange network and can be restored on a new phone. There is also the Orange Update feature which lets customers update their phone with the latest software as well as download and store new applications over the air.

The SPV E200 builds on recent Orange signature phone announcements and follows the success of the SPV and SPV E100 phones, which have proved to be the most successful Orange phones in terms of non-voice revenue.

- By 2005, Orange expects 25 per cent of revenues to come from non-voice services, about 10 euros per customer. The SPV already generates an average of 15 euros per customer from non-voice usage alone. Orange customers on average access the Internet five times a day from their SPV and over 80% of customers have synchronised the phone with their desktop computer.

- New research conducted by Edge Strategies in Europe and Asia has show that Windows Mobile-based Smartphone customers deliver an average revenue per user (ARPU) uplift of +25% (from 25 euros to 67 euros). The majority of this uplift is accounted for by an increase in non-voice usage drive through increased Internet browsing, wireless email and downloading applications.

- The study also found an increate in voice ARPU. Edge Strategies suggest that this could be related to incoming emails generating outgoing calls and that the seamless synchronisation of Outlook contacts helps users to have all their numbers accessible and easier to call.

Richard Brennan, Executive Vice President of Global Brand, Marketing and Products, said: "By partnering with some of the most innovative, advanced and exciting companies in the industry, Orange is providing it's customers with an unrivalled choice of services, style and experience. Our customers are being given a huge choice of design, operating system and functionality because of the power and potential of these partnerships."

"By marrying some of the most trusted and respected household names and providing our customers the quality of the Orange network, ease of use and exclusive Orange Services, our customers are benefiting from the knowledge that they are getting access to some of the most exciting products, first."

He added: "We're aiming to continue the success we have achieved with the SPV family so far, which have proved to be the most successful phones for Orange in terms of non-voice usage. We believe this success is due to successful marriage of compelling services with easy, one-touch access to those services."

Juha Christensen, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Mobile Devices Division, said: "This announcement with orange is evidence not only of the commitment from both companies to deliver innovative phones and services to customers but also to growing the Smartphone industry. We are particularly please that the latest research highlights a significant increase in ARPU from Windows Mobile - based smartphones and thereby demonstrates the value of our platform to both partners and customers."

The SPV E200 is due to be available from Orange during November 2003. It will be available from Orange in the UK, France, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium (Mobistar). Full pricing and further details will be available in each market closer to launch.

It's fun time! ;)

"]Well i've had the pleasure today of having a play with the SPV E200 ;)

So,

Anything you want to know? Ask me here! :D

P

Could you be so nice and provide an URL to the source of this press release? I haven't seen it at Orange's or Microsoft's web page.

Other question than that: EXACTLY what Bluetooth profiles this phone supports?

Can I borrow it for a couple of hours this afternoon?

Did you get chance to play with the camera? If so, are the pictures improved, and is there any kind of video recording function (or does it rely on IA Album for that?)

Is the new joystick an improvement & easy to use?

Anything particularly new and exciting about Winows Mobile 2003?

Is Windows Media Player still as basic, or does it now have search functions/any other improvements?

Cheers

Simon

Dear Simon: it has .NET Compact Framework - a thing about which I am dreaming already since October 2002 - when Microsoft people told me (they lied, b*stards) that it will be in Smartphone2002 in first half of year 2003. Now (or rather in November when this phone comes out) my dream - .NET in smartphone - will come truth. For me it more worth than built-in camera and at least the same worth as the built-in Bluetooth... AT LAST !!!!

Yes, .Net is very exciting. Very.

Paul,

You lucky lucky #######....

Will you get a chance to try it with a BT car kit or headset?

It would also be nice to know if it will sync via BT and activsync.

Post some pictures from the camera, let us see the quality.

Cheers

Rik

EVERYTHING about Bluetooth in it is of big interest to me. But above are truly the basic questions:

- headset supported?

- active sync-ing through Bluetooth supported?

(in both cases: better test it, than rely on mouth information...)

its got 32Mb of RAM, we know from previous information.

So it should be of comparable speed to the motorola mp200x, but of course there is the overhead of the fluffed out operating system, and whos to say how sp2003 will affact preformance without testing it. Paul?

litttle bit of confusion i think..

Some people are quoting internal memory (rom+ram?) some are quoting rom, some ram.

spv total internal mem = 32mb 16ram,16rom

dopod total internal mem = 64mb 32 ram 32rom

e200 = total internal mem = 64mb 32 ram 32rom

Hope that clears up?

Hey guys!

It's VERY nice, apparently has the same processor as the e100, but is noticeably faster, probably due to the additional RAM (32MB).

The camera is 640 x 480 still, but the picture taking application is excellent, with the update being very fluid, as you would expect from an internal camera.

The phone includes a 'Camcorder' application which records at QVGA, and is suprisingly effective.

The new joystick is a definite improvement on the old one, being very simple and smooth to use.

I haven't had a big play with WMP, but it does have WMP9 codecs, and allows WMA format ringtones too.

I haven't seen the egg timer at all in the period I had to play with it.

Here is what I think is the best bit... MS have provided a native MMS client in Smartphone 2003! This means no more EZOS client, and the MS client is a vast improvement.

Activesync over Bluetooth is supported in the base OS, so that will work, but the Headset profile needs to be implemented by the OEM - I think it's safe to assume that HTC have implemented this, although I haven't personally tested it.

The E200 includes the new enhanced start menu previewed in the Orange presentation some months ago, which works pretty well.

All in all, the E200 is a pretty exciting bit of kit, and something I'm definitely looking forward to getting my hands on for real testing!

FYI, the press release was given to me in paper format, which I then had to retype, for the 5am release deadline. I was very disappointed to see all the smartphone news sites then using this retyped release, and not crediting their source, tut tut!

Oh well, you know where to come if you want the best and latest info... ;)
