Do not experiment on SPV without knowing what to do!

Hi there....

I was just reading through the specifications of the SPV:

- processor: 132MHz

- 16MB RAM

- 32MB FLASH ROM

- 65,000 TFT screen

- Infra-red

- modem

- input/output media slots (i.e. disk drive)

hmmm.... A few years ago, I had Linux running very very fast indeed, running on my:

- processor: 486 66MHz

- 8MB RAM

- 420MB HD (about 60MB linux install)

- 256 colours screen

- motorola modem

- 3.5inch disk....

Everyone is complaining that the SPV runs slow, and I have experienced this myself... but we all know that windows is slow.... so why doens't someone do what the X-Box users have done.... and write a Linux version for the SPV!

Its too late for me to do this for my final year dissertation, but I'm sure there must be electronic engineers/ programmers out there that would try it..... afterall.. can you think of many things that they haven't ported Linux over to?

I'm sure it would work much faster than the equivelent Smartphone 2002....although we'll just have to find someone willing to risk it...... Anyone out there?

Well I posted that on the 28th November on this forum, and it looks like Florin has proved the concept :D

I don't know why you guys are so hard to please. Either Florin has been Bullspitting us from the start of any of his technical posts... or he is actually doing this kinda stuff..... and considering that most of the people that post on here are quite computer and techy literate, I'm sure that someone would have said something by now...

I'm impressed Florin, and if I was now not waiting for the P800 I would be interested in helping you if I could... But from what you have done so far it does look a very interesting project, and I'm sure that Microsoft would be very worried if they found out that some guy has come along, uninstalled their operating system, and put linux on - and the phone's performance has improved!

So let me see... the only hardware that we can run windows is on a:

- PC

- PDA

- Mobile phone

- Server

...erm no, as now we can put linux on all of them (I'm sure there are more though :( )

Once you get all the features working, I'm sure there will be a LOT of people interested in your work, so I wish you luck in working this out.

cause i don't have time for estetical problem of the phone  i don't use it as a phone just now..i have better phones..and main reason i have the phone is to make it working better  so ppl will pay for that!

how exactly are you intending to make money from linux its GNU! the only way people like corel made money from it is offering support. They still have to give ths system away free, its just the suport they charge for. I dont think people will pay you for support if they install it on their SPV's because the only people who are even slightly likely to use it on spv will be hardcore!

As the last guy said the whole spirit of linux is SHARE SHARE SHARE.

Sorry to say this but my experince with the emulation community (and omg have their been dozens of fake emulators Dreamcast being the best) means that you can never trust any one to tell the truth! This does not mean im doubting you florin it just means people need evidence or they will doubt! Personally i like to stay neutral you never know whats going to happen (wait and see) and people hate it when you make accusations of lying! And some insentive for florin how many people thought einstein darwin and other great scientist's were crazy before their theorys (and even proof's) seemed to be sound.

I take it that you've blown away the whole GSM stack, in order to get the GSM Encryption Algortihims you need to sign up to the GSM Mou....

Even if you could fake this... you would still need to give the handset an IMEI number, GSM operators get very worried when they see multiple IMEIS on the network, they can start to do velocity detection etc.

This would result in the IMEI being blacklisted straight away...

If you've just got the UI working, result but it's hardly a phone....

ok everyone.. time for a little reality check.

The future of the mobile world is little mobile computers with a radio. The SPV, 7650, p800 etc are just the first. All phones will be this way eventually (regardless of shape, color, or network protocol).

There will be a linux phone eventually; whether it will run on HTC hardware is yet to be seen. Florin_m can release info on his effort and get this started.... or he can not. It doesn't really matter, HTC provided a nice little boot loader that is accessible via serial and USB. Obviously someone will figure out how to get an ARM image booting on the SPV.

The great advantage to a linux phone would be a) lots of apps with source :( fast bug fixes and c) and a open platform where we can use whatever language we want to write applications. Current mobile platforms suck in many ways... Smartphone is limited to C / C++ (without exceptions) and a reduced API set, symbian isn't really a real multitasking OS, J2ME has huge limits, etc.

The largest battle will be with mobile operators who don't like to idea of a hackers OS running amok on their network :D

I think we are missing something here... We just want to hack the SP OS and get that certification OFF.. Network unlock is another thing we are trying to achieve!!

When did anyone say anything about linux?!?!????

Should we do first things first and get the PHONE working, not a powerfull computing system in a mobile phone that is not actually gonna work as a phone, has no touch screen or any kind of decent navigation controls and is totally useless at this stage... Apart from the few people who actually know what Linux is all about, like it and want to use it (and know how to)... For the best part of us Linux on a PC is not a very desired and friendly OS, what are those ppl gonna do with a command line on their phones??

And (even though I'm no Linux specialist) it WILL take TIME to adapt Linux to this thing, so by the time we do that - there will already be a whole new market dealing in that area, when a whole community of R&D gets to it... Who wins?? Ain't got a clue.

I am happy there are people that are willing to make things better, but if your car is broken - you FIX the broken part of your car - you don't make it FLY.. not just yet

You are right if you are talking about a business. In business we should work towards the most useful fixes and tools first and probably never do anything crazy because there's no business benefit.

However we are not, we are involved in a great anarchistic community called the internet where anyone can do what they like. If you want fixes to these issues feel free to get the tools and start working on it.

If Florin_m wants to make a flying car, then I say good luck to her and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on what altitude it reaches.

I will love it if she builds a a flying car, but why not fix the old one so we can use it meanwhile? It would be nice to drive a good car, but how nice is it to drive a car that is modified to your own taste/design?? Like putting a better stereo in - but with cert. and all that - you cannot do that (no surprise). And when the flying car is ready -

WHOOO HOO!! A Nobel Prize is what the master would deserve..

Until then I am happy driving what i have, though a better Player (instead of WMA) or a memory manager would make it so much better!!

And no, i am not clever enough to get the tools and do it myself, so all the hope goes to people who are and can do it..

And I'm pretty neutral too, end of the day if there wasn't a glimpse of hope, we would not be all discussing this issue..

If you have a look at my previous post on this topic it was followed up by MR florins last post which was full of references to someone that could back up his claims @ redhat, unfortunatly this post has now been edited by Ms Florin. I can only guess that the @ subject was less than happy to be referenced. I did think it was rather gutsy of Mrs Florin to let us know that being so brilliant (or surrounded by thickies) that he was known as Einstein at school, I guess they, like I, am easily impressed.

I enjoy living on the bleeding edge of software regularly, trouble is I have yet to see an artery open here, master florin tempt me to why after years of struggle we can get Linux on an ipaq fairly well but to the majority it is totally useless as it does not synchronise with anything.

Linux is great if you want stand alone, functionally rich OS but if you want a phone that acts like a phone and you run an MS box as your desktop don’t even bother going down this route. Open sorce is great but not if you want to call someone on an SPV

If you want linux have a look at all the suppliers out there for desktops (personally I would have Redhat just now)and then look at the huge strides the people at Handhelds.org have done in getting linux on a pocket PC over a couple of years....... and more importantly getting the external comms to work - this is not trivial!!!

PS if you have an iPaq, Have a go, its worth the effort for the learning experience. its still a great environment but be prepared to live beyond the edge for a while.

Maybe some picture with myself too?

Why u ppl are hard to pleased?

U realy want me to stop posting here about my research?

First question:

What I'm earning IF I'll lie to u?

Secound:

I'm posting what i managed to do just to let u know what u can do with ur spv, and to make u work more on it or less on it (cause i allready found the solution) take as u want it

That's all for the moment.

Florin - If I could get hold of a ROM flash from the developer version of the phone, could it be applied to my phone to give me access to unsigned apps? I run a smartphone gaming site and it's a real pain to have to wait until an game is signed before playing it.

i rekon its possible for you todo yourself

XDA and Smartphone sound very similar, we have a similar bootloader.

This app should probably do it its from http://xda-developers.com/

"The XDA has the ability to read and write ROM images to SD card (ed: so does the smartphone). Using the XDA Rom Image Tool (XDArit.exe), you can use a Windows PC to read SD-cards created by the phone, and write to them as well. The program will also read the .nbf files distributed with the firmware upgrade software."

That makes the therotical process:

1) Use florins method to dump the rom image to the SD Card

2) Read the image using the XDA ROM image tool

3) Dump that to a file

4) Distribute to whowever (us?) :D

Otherwise Just get someone to dump the rom to an SD Card and send you/give you the sd card, i bet it would work not tried it myself.
