Mpx GPRS problem?

Just wondered if anyone else has this problem... when U turn the phone on the handset doesn't 'hunt' for a GPRS signal until U tell it to go off and do something, (i.e. check e-mail, log on to the web etc.)... In other words there is no big 'G' to say that GPRS is available and so basically it won't auto sync and check e-mails until after the first time U manually do it... and god forbid if U have the data settings set to 'Automatic' because it won't log on to pretty much anything!

It sounds very similair to a problem that Pagemakers had earlier with the phone not attaching to the GPRS network on startup.

I believe he deleted all the existing dial-up connections

Programs-Settings-Data connections

Menu - Edit Connections - Dial-up connections.

Let us know if it works.

well in a strange way it's comforting to know it's not just my handset!!! But anyway I have e-mailed Moto about it and will post whatever answer I get... but in between times if any one else knows how to fix this that would be great

If i'm right this fault has only been reported on the mpx200.

I would imagine that it's probably software/registry related but there would be an easy way to confirm it.

Any takers for a hard reset  If it cleared then you would know its something easily corrected in the phone.

Well I've had a fumble round in the registry but I'm no expert so it would have to be glaringly obvious and it isn't unfortunately

And the hard reset... yep tried it and nope that didn't work either!!!

So a hard reset doesn't cure it.

Ideally at this point you would have a SIM unlocked MPX200 with another network operators SIM card with GPRS. I assume your mpx200 is locked.

Which network provider are you using ?

It is possible that this fault is related to the Orange network. The MPX200 has been out for several months in the US but I've hadn't heard of this complaint until recently. This is third time I've heard it and I believe they are all Orange phones.

Have you also raised a fault with O ?

It's good to see that the E200 doesn't have the monopoly on bugs :;

That was my first port of call but to be perfectly honest when it comes to things that are remotely technical it's the hardest thing in the world to actually get to speak to anyone at O that even sounds remotely like they have a clue what U are talking about!!!

In fact the closest I go to an answer was the following...

"Oh yeah I've spoken to the fax and data team and they say that the phone is always connectoed to GPRS and the fact that it isn't displaying the 'G' on the home screen it must be a design issue within the phone because although it is a smartphone it only runs the smartphone 'platform' and may not react in the same way as other handsets using the same software... would U like me to give U the # for Motorola?'

Helpful huh!

Hmmmm another twist to the story... I just had a failed connection on an automated e-mail sync and guess what... it'd dropped the GPRS again until I logged on!!!

Hmmmm!!! 8)

Unfortunately not yet no

Mailed both Moto and Orange here in the UK and am waiting on responses from either or both... but not really holding my breath

yeah I've heard from a few American users that it doesn't seem to be a problem on the US version of the phone... Guess it's looking like an Orange thing!

I think I'm having this problem as well. If I have Internet data connection set to Orange GPRS I can send/receive stuff fine on the move, but when I put the phone in cradle and try to do send/receive it says something like "can't use GPRS do you want to use pass through instead?", obviously I click 'yes' and it works fine. The problem is that when it is removed from cradle it seems to reset the default Internet connection setting to Automatic, which doesn't then automatically connect to GPRS again (if I try to get a connection I get the 'arrows' icon indicating it is trying to use the (not present) pass through connection). After changing the default data connection back to Orange GPRS from Automatic it works fine again until the phone is put back in cradle.

In a nutshell, the Automatic connection setting doesn't work and I have to manually change the connection setting each time I put the phone in the cradle. Surely this can't be right? Is anyone else having this?

I remember that when I had my SPV someone posted some 'alternate' settings for the data connections options, I've not got a cradle at work so can't test it out today, but has anyone tried the same settings on the MPx200?

Yep I have tried them! Although I should say that it never really cured the problem on the SPV... well it did if U never use a dial up connection for anything... and nope it doesn't work on the MPx as it won't connect to GPRS from startup without being forced to do it!!!

But the prblem U seem to be having is slightly different to the one I described at the start of this post but it certainly sounds like a variation on the theme!!!

Edit your data connections and change anything other than Orange GPRS that connects to the internet to connect somewhere else instead. e.g if Orange CSD WAP in the dial up connections is pointed at the internet then point it at the WAP network where it should be. When you are finished the only options in the internet connection spinner should be

Automatic

Orange GPRS

Pass through connection

If you do this and leave the connection on automatic then everything will magically work as it should.

EDIT: Just in case you are wondering why your automatic email sync isn't working after a reboot, it never did with the SPV. You have to open your inbox to kick start it, smartphone 2002 OS "feature" I'm afraid.

Doesn't really matter where you point them as long as its not to internet. They don't appear to all that necessary to be honest if you are using GPRS to check your email. Trust me, it all works with just Orange GPRS as the only connection to the internet.

I posted this in a previous topic so you may have already seen it but here are a couple of data settings that I had tried for the pass through connection. It might help

You can just set the Orange CSD and Orange WAP back to 'Connects to The Internet' for the original settings. The problem with making the above connect to WAP network is that you bypass the proxy and lose WSP WAP which is needed for the WAP promotion.

I had tried two methods of settings up the pass through connection. I don't which is easier

Setup1

Dock SPV in cradle

Goto PC Activesynch-Options-Rules and make 'Pass through Connection:Work'

Orange CSD connects to the Internet.

Orange WAP connects to the Internet.

Orange GPRS connects to The Internet.

Proxy connects from The Internet to WAP network.

Internet Connection=The Internet

Work Connection='Pass through connection'.

WAP connection=Orange WAP or Orange CSD.

Goto pocket IE and make 'Select network: My Corporate Network'.

When docked untick 'Auto detect settings'in IE (to force use of the Work connection/pass through) and when not docked re-tick 'Auto detect settings (to use Internet/WAP connections as normal). This method keeps all your original GPRS/CSD data settings and just adds a pass through to the work connection which you select manually.

Setup2

Dock SPV in Cradle.

Goto PC Activeynch-Options-Rules and make 'Pass through Connection: The Internet'.

Orange CSD connects to My Corporate Network.

Orange WAP connects to My Corporate Network.

Orange GPRS connects to The Internet.

Proxy connects from My Corporate network to WAP Network.

Internet connection: Automatic (make sure that only Orange GPRS/Pass through and Automatic are selectable).

Work Connection: (doesn't matter).

WAP connection: Orange WAP or Orange CSD.

Goto pocket IE and tick 'Auto detect settings'.

The SPV should automatically use the pass through when docked and Orange GPRS when not docked. The WAP connection is still in use because it uses the proxy via the work connection.

OK well here goes... tried your tip Shuflie and it's exactly the same situation as with my old original SPV...

If, like me, U have your WAP settings set to Orange CSD Wap and the dial up connection is edited in the way U describe, (i.e. Orange CSD wap pointing to the Wap Network), the phone will never find a WAP page using the wsp protocol... the only way it will is using the http protocol as a standard GPRS web connection!!! Kind of defeats the object when I am intending to use WAP on a standard dial up connection & web access & email using GPRS...

It is more complicated to explain than that but I would rattle on for pages here if I tried!!!

Martin... tried your second tip, (I chose that because I'm generally idle & prefer the phone to do ALL the work  ), and spot on... works like a charm... just gotta get this little problem with it not attaching to GPRS on start-up & that will be all my probs with the phone done & dusted

:D

Guest Shuflie

I've never really bothered much with wap ever since I got the SPV, glad Martin's setup was able to get you sorted. Is your main problem now that you just don't have the G symbol showing up after a reboot or that it won't actually connect to GPRS when you first try?
