After unsuccessful attempts to change the kernel commandline , eg. to:

disable_uart3=0

usb_h2w_sw=0

we've been successful in discovering (with the help of XDA-developers) that these switches are stored in the first NAND partition, mtd0, or 'misc'.

You must be rooted to try the following, it seems you can't write to mtd0 without root.

Do step 1 again if you have to.

Also, SD card functionality has to work. For this, do 'fastboot oem enableqxdm 0' in fastboot mode.

Steps involved:

1. Find out your CID. Go into fastboot mode, and do 'fastboot oem boot'.

The log will say something like the following:

#INFOTAG:Ramdisk OK

#INFOTAG:smi ok, size = 0

#INFOTAG:hwid 0x0

#INFOTAG:skuid 0x21F04

#INFOTAG:hero panel = 0x0

#INFOTAG:engineerid = 0x0

#INFOMCP dual-die

#INFOMCP dual-die

#INFOTAG:mono-die = 0x0

#INFODevice CID is not super CID

#INFOCID is HTC__E11

In this specific case, the CID is HTC__E11.

2. Get the following mtd0.img from here or from here: mirror provided by SgtDavePwnage.

Edit this image to the CID you found above with a hex editor.

3. Get flash_image from here or from here: mirror provided by SgtDavePwnage.

Move this to /data/ , and flash the modified image using:

"/data/flash_image misc /data/mtd0.img"

You can move both mtd0.img and flash_image by putting it on your sdcard, and issueing the following command in a terminal emulator:

'cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image'

'cat /sdcard/mtd0.img > /data/mtd0.img'

You might have to do 'chmod u+x /data/flash_image' before you run the commands (or chmod 755 /data/flash_image)

4. Repeat step 3 a couple of times if it doesn't seem to work well.

5. All done! Reboot, you should have normal usb connectivity. Post your 'fastboot oem boot' log and intermediate steps if it fails.

Welcome to my guide on how to root the HTC Legend!

Compatibility

This guide will allow you to root your HTC Legend, provided it has a bootloader version of 0.43.xxxx or below and a ROM version of 1.31.xxx.x or below. To check this, turn off your device, then turn it back on with the 'back' key held. On the second line in green text you will see HBOOT- and then a number. Provided this is 0.43 or below, this guide should work for you.

Legend rooting protection

Back in the early days of Android, rooting was easy. You had several options - you could flash stuff via the bootloader, you could flash an engineering bootloader, you could use kernel exploits - there were many ways of getting the low level access to your device that - in fairness - I think we as paying customers are entitled to. As time has progressed however, the manufacturers have made things harder and harder. The Legend is not a straightforward phone to root, for many reasons, including...

• a 'perfected bootloader' that doesn't allow flashing or booting of any images (even HTC signed ones)
  
• a RUU flash process that does not allow downgrading of the bootloader to earlier versions
  
• a kernel (that as yet does not have publicly available source) that as yet has no known exploits
  
• a new protection method previously seen on the HTC Tattoo that protects key partitions from having write access. Even with SU access, it is not possible to write to the boot, recovery or system partitions.
  
  
  And so the root process becomes a process of methodically probing every possible point of exposure on the device, looking for the slightest chink in the armour. I found one and we're putting it to good use! The downside is that it's not as easy or as pretty as rooting a device that is actually DESIGNED to be accessible at the lowest level, such as the Nexus One.
  
  Shame on you HTC for going to such unnecessary lengths (but that's another story for another day).
  
  What this root process provides and does not provide
  
  The root process will...
  • flash your device with a new, generic 1.31 series based ROM that has Superuser access
    
  • show you how to enter the recovery image in future, allowing you to flash update zips
    
    • enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on
      
    • enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device
      
      
      Pre-requisites
      
      In order to complete this guide, you need the following...

      • a HTC Legend B)
        
      • a computer running Windows (32 bit recommended, some users have reported issues with x64), OSX or Linux
        
      • a microUSB cable
        
      • a microSD card (to be made into a 'goldcard')
        
      • the download below
        
      • balls of steel (actually, I just made that up) :D
        

      Download

      To be ready for the guide, download the following items...

      [*]the required files - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire Pro) - MD5: rm6154a24e21df9fb6f542834f76e0d8f9

      Once you have this on your machine, you're ready to start! :huh:

      The guide

      Follow through these steps, one by one and at the end of it you'll have a rooted Legend with the latest ROM.

      Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.

      [*]Make your microSD card into a goldcard by following these instructions (it's a good idea to back up the contents of your card first!).

      [*]Unzip the file you downloaded to a directory, then open a command prompt / terminal window at that directory.

      [*]Turn off your HTC Legend, then turn it back on with the 'back' button held down. You'll see 'FASTBOOT' written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer.

      [*]In the terminal window, enter either 'step1-windows.bat', './step1-mac.sh' or './step1-linux.sh' as appropriate.

      [*]When this step has completed, REMOVE THE GOLDCARD and either format it and replace, or replace with a different (non goldcard) microSD.

      [*]Navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.

      [*]In the terminal window, enter either 'step2-windows.bat', './step2-mac.sh' or './step2-linux.sh' as appropriate.

      [*]When this has completed, your device should be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe' option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select 'rootedupdate.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE! :P

      If you have any issues with the root process, post below, and we'll do our best to help! :blink:

      Recovery mode for future updates

      Once you are rooted, you can enter recovery mode by turning your device on with the volume button held down and selecting 'RECOVERY', then running either 'recovery-windows.bat', './recovery-mac.sh' or './recovery-linux.sh' as appropriate from the root zip directory.

I used HTCDEV site to unlock the bootloader.

Bootloader : 1.02.0000

S-ON

Then I perm rooted the phone using HTCSuperToolv3.

Installed Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0.

Flashed CM7.1 (Didn't like it)

Flashed nNS-1.0rc4b (I like it but I want to go back to Stock)

So I find myself

You should then be able to downgrade in the normal way.

I tried changing from "2e recovery" to "3e recovery" that doesn't check signature. Unfortunately, I was not aware that the program was written for Samsung phones.

The result of that "stupid" act was that when I Power Reset with Volume down I get into "Factory Mode" which allows me to test the phone, clear its flash and reboot into operating system - no recovery option !!!

I tried to "adb reboot recovery" the phone reboots and hangs with the green HTC on its screen.

I tried to copy files into root but its write protected.

It seems I am stuck in present Android version (2.1) as without recovery I can't upgrade - which was the reason for the unfortunate "3e recovery" installation in the first place.

Any idea? Advice? - Maybe a possibility to upgrade WITHOUT going into recovery mode (I guess not...)?

yesterday, i've downgraded from Android V2.2 to 1.31x, then i've flashed the cyanogenmod 7.0.3 - so far, so good

After rebooting the Legend, it was starting to reboot again and again (HTC Logo shows up, reboot, HTC Logo shows up, reboot ... )

Cyanogenmod starts when USB is connected to the Computer (or Charger)

Cyanogenmod does not recognize the SD Card, so that i am not able to run any update.zip files (to maybe get out of this mess ^^)

USB Connection is also not working - i suggest due to wrong/mising drivers, but haven't found anything yet

The third thing i've found is that the ROM Manager isn't installed in the system anymore not in Superuser and (due to the missing update.zip) also not in Recovery mode

So currently i can't connect to the File system from external sources and need help - what is your suggestion for the best way to get into the system? I suggest some new/updated USB drivers might be helpful, but i do not know where to get them

... but i am also open for any other options :)

i'm folowing your tutorlal but when i'm running the step2-windows.bat ( or the SH version on linux as i try under this plateform) i haven't got ADB driver in recovery mode, so i can't succes this step...

I want to remove some pre-installed apps from an HTC Legend and, as I am not an expert, I need some advice. So far, I have done the follwing:

- I have downgraded from Android 2.2/Build 3.15 to Android 2.1/Build 1.31.405.4.

- HBOOT is 1.01.000

- I have installed Titanium VISIONary+, perm rooted the phone

- Installed Titanium Backup

When I started Titanium, I got only 5 apps listed, and the advice to install BusyBox.

I installed Busybox installer, as well as Busybox itself (fromMarket), phone said it was successfully installed. Back to Busybox installer, try to install but I get the message: “application failed, either because the device is not nand or we were unable to remount”.

When I start Titanium, it says the phone is rooted. In the apps list I see now all the apps, the Busybox installer, but not Busybox itself.

Nonetheless I try to uninstall an app (e.g. Flickr), the phone reboots and when its back on the app is still there.

So I try it a different way: adb shell, su, rm /system/app/Flickr.apk, reply is rm failed, directory not empty.

I have been looking for a solution on the blogs, so far I tried everything but it still does not work. As I am a novice in all this, I would rather not flash a ROM or whatever drastic measures I should take.

So here are two questions:

- I I freeze an app with Titanium, it is taken away from the apps screen, does this mean it does not run anymore?

- Anyway, as this is a principle matter, I really could use some advice on how to physicalle delete some of these apps.

The problem is now..

When i turn the phone on it keeps looping on the blue logo with the elctricity going around...cant turn it off cant do anything, have to manually take the battery out and start it up again..

Im not sure how to get my original rom back on, but i tried to get into the recovery menu atleast..I can get to the fastboot, but when i go into bootloader, then click recovery it does everything normally, it shows the red triangle, I run recovery-windows.bat ( provides in Paul's tutorial at modaco ) and it says device not found..

EDIT: before I installed cyanogen, i disabled debugging mode for something, and I dont think i turned it back on :S I think it may have something to do with me not getting into recovery...what do i do! :'(

When I try to pair with a Qstarz BT-Q890 bluetooth GPS mouse, I get an error: "There was a problem pairing with Qstarz GPS because thhe PIN or Passkey is incorrect."

I entered 0000 for the PIN, which is the correct value according to the manual and also works on my ubuntu lucid netbook.

Additionaly the GPS is no longer found in a BT scan after this. When entering other PIN values, this doesn't happen, so it looks to me like the GPS accepts the PIN....

Unfortunately I haven't tried pairing with the GPS before rooting the phone, so I am not sure if it is related to rooting or just to the Legend firmware.

I would really like this to work, any suggestions?

I can't get Busybox to install. Or to make any modifications to files in /system to stick after reboot.

I'm guessing the NAND is still locked.

Any ideas on how to unlock NAND?

I want to edit my system folder, mainly because I want to edit the hosts file. However I just can't seem to get it to work. I'm on a rooted legend with paul's stock froyo rom & used his rooting guide.

What I tried:

Root explorer. Doesn't work, gives a error of not enough free space whenever I want to copy a file. Also deleting doesn't actually really work because after a reboot files just return.

adb shell: Just keeps giving me errors like cp: not found, wget: not found, push: not found etc. Or when i'm in the folder and want to do something directory is not empty.

Terminal app: Same errors.

So I googled and it seems adb sucks and you need busybox. So I download titanium backup and have it install busybox. Boot root and busybox are OK. Still same errors.

I'm doing thing while the phone is fully booted. I also tried from recovery mode (traingle screen) but than I can't get adb to connect.

What am I doing wrong or how can I fix this? There seem to be tons of people who can do this no problem and got all the commands working even without intstalling additional software. It seems my craptatstic Legend is the only one that doesn't want to play ball...

I've just got a Legend and can't see how to set the sounds right. I want:

A sound when I receive an email or SMS

No sound for a Calendar event reminder

Or are there apps that would give this?

I started step 1 of rooting, it worked fine until I continued to step 2.

It happened to be like this

then I selected Wipe option after that I tried to select "Flash zip from sdcard"

and it showed "E:No zip files found"

What should I do?

If so, could you tell how you did it? I tried it today with my Legend which is rooted.

So what i've done is this:

In the shell I checked with df where my sdcard is mounted, the output was: /mnt/sdcard/

Then i moved bullcrap.apk with the shell out of /data/app/ to /mnt/sdcard/appp (i chose appp to be sure to have no interference with the os).

And then i created a softlink with:

ln -s /mnt/sdcard/appp/bullcrap.apk /data/app/bullcrap.apk

After this, i checked if the softlink was created correctly and it showed up correctly.

But when turning the phone up, bullcrap didnt show up in the applications.

In Linux itself these links work. You guys have any idea why it does not work under android?

i want to unroot my legend so i can send it back to vodafone for a repair however i cant remember the stock ROM version, also i remember i had to change my radio version before i could initially root my phone but i cant remember what the radio version was. does anybody know what Vodafone UK shipped the legend with?
