Smartphone 2003 as USB modem on OS X

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm making a last ditch effort to find other Mac users that have succesfully configured their Mac to connect via the USB cable to the internet using their i600 as a modem. I tried this post over on pdaphonehome.com, but I think I may get better results (or hopefully SOME response) from here.

I'm currently receiving PPP errors every time I try to connect. The following was my setup, quoted from a post on pdaphonehome.com about a year ago--which successfully worked under 2002.

First, you need to configure your phone. Go into Settings > More... > Phone Settings > Other and set the USB to External Data Call. Connect your phone to your Macintosh using either the cradle or aftermarket connector.

Then, go into System Preferences > Network. Under the Show pick-list, select Network Port Configurations. Click New... and enter a name for the port (Samsung i600) and in the Port pick-list select SAMSUNG CDMA Technologies. If that does not show up, ensure your phone is configured as above and is connected. (NB if you power-cycle your phone it defaults to ActiveSync and you need to set it to External Data Call again.) Hit OK to save the new port.

Make sure the checkbox next to your new port is selected for the location you want to use the phone as a USB modem (assuming you have multiple locations.) Then under the Show pick-list, select the port. now you need to configure the phone as a modem. Under PPP for Account Name enter [email protected] where nnnnnnnnnn is your phone number without punctuation. Enter the Password of vzw and Phone Number of #777. Leave alternate number blank, though you can name the connection whatever you want (Verizon Wireless). The only other part that needs to be modified is under the Modem tab, in the pick-list called Modem. Set that to SUNTAC U-Cable D3(PDC). You can Apply Now and then open the program Internet Connect, where your i600 will now function as a USB modem as long as it is (a) connected and (:D set to External Data Call (assuming of course you do not have a conflicting program like PocketMac, etc.)

Now, when I open Internet Connect and try to connect, I first get an error of "The modem unexpected hung up ..." accompanied by the following in the connection log (with verbose logging turned on.)

I immediately try again, getting a "Could not negotiation a connection with the remote PPP server ..." error after a longer wait. During this time the external LCD repeatedly shows the 'connecting animation' (of the phone with the arrows going towards the old phone), but then returns to the time. This is immediately after each 'sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 asyncmap 0x0 magic 0x5d2b2241 pcomp accomp]' in the following log.

( For above code blocks, all greater then and less then symbols have been removed due to the bb taking them as tags. )

For throughness sake, I did a whole bunch of web searchs and the only real suggestion I could find was to use the 'Sprint PCS Vision' driver rather then the SUNTAC with the same results.

I'd appreciate any help that could be offered. I usually don't have too many problems getting things to work, but this has me stumped. Thanks.
