Just bought T-Mobile MDA Vario - ROM Advice

Hi Everyone :)

I've just bought a T-Mobile MDA Vario (not arrived yet) and due to past experiences would rather get rid of the T-Mobile ROM if I can...

I have heard online that it is possible to load the Qtek 9100 ROM on this device, and wondered if anyone had any warnings or recommendations as to what the best ROM actually is? (I'm not asking for download links!)

I can't stand the T-Mobile "customise to high hell" attitude that they seem to take, so I just wondered if anyone has any recommendations or experiences with the Qtek 9100 ROM?

Thanks,

Mike

Power it on. As soon as it starts to "customise" the phone, do a soft reset. it will stop installing the T Mobile software. If you missed it, you'll have to do a nhard reset and try again.

Once successful, set it up for GPRS, MMS, etc and it'll be perfect for you. :)

Thanks for that, sounds like good advice! I didn't realise you could get around all of the software installing like that, I thought it would just keep on trying until you let it proceed... ROCK ON!!! :D

Thanks

I just thought i'd expand on that a bit more as you'll have better luck if you know what you're looking for. When you first turn the phone on you'll set up the screen(by tapping different bits of it) then you may need to learn how to copy and paste depending on what version rom it has, then finally set time zone and password. Once you click save on the password a box will pop up saying customizing in 3 seconds and then count down. Get the stylus and press the reset button on the side of the phone before it gets to 0! Have a look where it is first so you have best chance. :)

Ahh, interesting idea. Here's what's going on with my TMobile Wizard (my nickname is lucky ;) ). Well, I received it new about a month ago as I decided to switch to PPC after years of Nokia 6600 Symbian play. Two days ago, I got one of the Wizards DEATH SCREENS. Yep, hung up at the Today screen, the display totally unresponsive with the stylus. Strange, I was able to navigate manually with the keys and even the slide out keypad. The phone worked fine (until hard reset...see below), but the screen was again, totally unresponsive as far a being touch-screen capable. Simple solution...just recalibrate the screen...after all, I did read about all of the early MDA issues about doing so, sometimes several times per day. Rut Roe....the crosshair is now unresponsive. It was about this time that I considered aiming something a bit more intimadating at the crosshair than the handy collapsable stylus.....9mm.....45ACP Btw, what a trick to activate the START tab from the Today Screen. For some reason, it would not load after being highlighted and then manually selected with the main select key or button. Next soft reset, no dice. Hard reset, same bloody thing. Running out of idea's with the exception of reinstalling the firmware for the phone off the TMobile website, I called TMobile tech support...patched thru to a MDA specialist. He was very helpful....in helping me order my REPLACEMENT MDA...after owning this new one for only 30 days or so. He informs me I might receive a refurb'ed phone....I mumbled my nickname....He proceeds to ask me if I want the UPS ground $9.99 or the expedited service for an additional charge...on top of the standard charge...Nickname again. As I am completely serious with the long winded saga, I find it aids in the humor and patience I gain. They did waive the shipping charges....but only for the standard ground rate. Yes sir, I might get my 2nd MDA (I'm afraid to use the word NEW) by March 14th....this year of course. Now, the MDA phone portion won't work because I cannot get beyond the crosshair calibrate screen. I tried reloading the ROM-ware and it loads 100% but again, I cannot get beyond the crosshair setup.

That led me to this Post about loading the 9100 ROM. I doubt it will work as I believe the problem is hardware (screen display) and has nothing to do with software. However, since I have some time till the 2nd stringer arrives, I thought I'd put this out here and read the replies. Since my MDA is under warranty with TMobile (repeat Nickname) I will not try installing the 9100 ROM because if the phone lock's up there, they'll probably tell me I voided the warranty (I could always reinstall the TM ROM is that occurred, but due to my Nickname, I'll pass). I also mailed my 6600 Sat. to it's new owner so I cannot use that....and since TMobile shipped my MDA directly to my residence, I cannot swap it at the local TM store...Nickname...but I can go to the store for a loaner. All in all, I still like my MDA...it's just that I can't use it....right now.
