JuiceDefender

There's an app in the Android market called JuiceDefender. Put simply, it rocks.

My battery life has double as a result.

Try it, you might like it.

Absolutely - I had some issues with the last version in the market, and I sent some details to the developer - he sent me a beta, which fixed it. I've just not got round to buying UltimateJuice (the paid for exension).

Hi. I have Locale at the moment which does similar things, but more.

So what advantages does JuiceDefender have over Locale? Thanks.

I've taken a look, but it appears to have rules based on location, and I couldn't find any mention of enabling / disabling data. JuiceDefender is free, and Ultimate Juice (with its added options) is only €2.79 vs Locale which is $9.99 and doesn't seem to offer what I want - which is a way of defining the frequency of data being enabled to make my phone function well, but increase the battery life substantially.

What I like about JuiceDefender so far is being able to set thresholds for data connectivity, rather than shutting it off completely (which you can still do). For example I have it set to disable APN/WiFi except when my data traffic is 10kb/15secs, so I can set something downloading and know that when its done, my APN/Wifi will shut down saving me battery. At least thats what I understand it is doing! Either way, I've seen massive improvements from using this app, although I'm interested in Locale if it can do even more?

Hi,

I too was a Locale user since the Beta, and also bought the full version when it came out at $9.99.

I was using locale to turn my Wifi on when I got to Work/Home/Friends house, etc and to change my volume etc when it got to 10pm. To do this I was using locale's locations. I began to notice as I was out and about more and more, that my battery was running down very quickly. After looking at what was using the battery I could see that Locale was using about 80% of my battery.

I've now switched to Juice Defender, and Timerific. With Ultimate Juice I can turn on my wifi when I'm near "known sids" and have it off the rest of the time. And I love the turn wifi/apn on for 5mins every 30mins. My standby time has increased loads.

Before installing this I was thinking about getting an extended battery, with this I may not need to.

Cheers

Kevin

Locale is a CRAP !

since they cut-off their Beta without talking I searched a replacement soft !

I find Tasker (still beta, not on the market)

The author said that the application will cost $4 (ok just half than locale)

BTW this application is HUGE !

you can personalize so much things that in coparaison locale is a kid-toy !

get a look here:

http://tasker.dinglisch.net/index.html

look at somes examples on wiki:

http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index

for my use:

-mute phone, wifi-off and change my gtalk status, when localized near work (radio position based, not gps)

-nightmode with wifi-off when AC pluged after 23:00

-secure-mode turn off pattern + other things when connected to my home Wifi

-loggin for fun my position(radio or gps) and my battery level

-energy-save-mode (wifi off, data off...) activated by a shortcut on desktop...

The battery consumtion is quite good.

the beta test can be downloaded on their forum :)

Though I agree it's a nice application for people want to automate things, but I prefer not to have yet another background process.

I turn down brightness at night myself, as well as toggling WiFi/GPS/APN/etc manually, on a per-need basis and do manual syncs when I want to update the contents of Twitter/Gmail/RSS.

I use Quick Settings (an application, not a widget) to do so - it's quick and convenient and doesn't take up anything other than some space.

Has anyone else found that when disabling this app, the 3G/H/Edge whatever doesn't come back? I found when disabling this, uninstalling etc - My phone won't connect to 3G networks. Anyone got any tips on why this might be happening?

Thanks!

true, I noticed juicedefender messing my APN as well. When it's enabled, and I go to check the wirless settings -> mobile network -> access point names, I notice that juicedefender blocks my APN by putting juicedefender at the adress of my APN. f.e. my APN is juicedefender.mworld.be which should be normally only mworld.be

I know it's normal and thats the way they block the APN from constantly be connected but it's buggy since it won't go to it normal stats whenever I disable juicedefender

When I was using Cronos's ROM, Juice Defender worked perfectly. Switching on mobile data every 15 mins as I wanted.

Now I'm using the r4 b3 pre-release to MCR4, Juice Defender no longer works. Mobile Data just stays on all the time (when I have signal obviously)

:)

juice defender changes APN form myapn to juicedefender;myapn to disable APN

Where are those settings? In the app itself?

No, at the bottom of the APN settings - so go into your APN to edit its details, and the last entry is APN type (though that didn't seem to solve it for me, so I've emailed the developer).

Yeah just checked and it already says "default, supl, mms"

Hmmm...

I do enjoy this app a lot, but the only annoying this is if your phone is in airplane mode (which I have to do quite a lot) I just get constant FCs from the app, probably because it's trying to disable the APN whilst it's already disabled. I'm going to email the developer and see if he can do a tweak to stop it.

Sorry i wrote TO instead of From in my post

They must NOT be "default, supl, mms" thazt's the reason it does not work

Set it only "default" and it will work

So after reading the replies, I downloaded it, disabled Locale, and gave it a go, a few days ago.

And here is what I think. Firstly the configuration is a bit confusing to start with by being so different to other apps, but after reading the help it is not too complicated. The graph app is nice to look at and probably useful for the first few days. I used the common configuration which is 1 min in every 15 mins, connection on when screen on, etc. And the end result is that it definitely saves more battery than Locale ever did, and it also got rid of the annoying sudden "jerk" that Locale introduces when it tries to use GPS. No lag whatsoever with JD. Overall I think it is quite a nice app.

However I will have to get rid of it and go back to Locale, because Locale provides configuration for things that JD dosen't do. For example I want Volume to be lower at work, and very loud at home. I want Bluetooth to be enabled only if I am neither at home nor at work (for car handsfree). I want Newsrob to sync only when I am at home and on Wifi. Etc.

But I will definitely keep an eye out for the development JD, and maybe in the future attempt to use both, and I will also recommend JD to friends.

Hello !

I also installed this app on my htc hero (mcr4b3) and it tends to slow down the phone at a point it is almost unusable.

For example, when I turn it on, I sometimes have to wait for 10-20 seconds before I can actually launch an application.

The log file of the program is saying that "something is pegging the cpu ...."

I also use advanced task killer at the same time, but I doubt this is the problem

Anyone had this problem ? I use the basic settings of the program.

Thanks
