I've got exactly the same problem. I'm trying to do something very different (use adb shell to remove the old version of gmail), but am getting the:

- exec ' system bin sh' failed no such file or directory (2)

error.

I'm running the latest modaco sense rom, with a fully rooted, perfectly working phone. Help!

Fixed my own problem, it seems I wasn't mounting the system first! It was all fine if I ran the command:

mount -o rw /system

first.

(By the way, I'd tried that before, but was using a USB extension cable, which was making even mounting commands fail.)
