Thank You!

Very helpful description!

How to Install a Custom ROM on the ZTE Blade

STOP
currently this page is for ZTE-BLADE devices that have the old style memory layout [GEN1] blades.

The [GEN2] Thread for installing ROMS is here :

This means that [GEN1] BLADES that use the baseband of
0x02A00000
and they can use anything on this page

If your device has the new [GEN2] layout its baseband will be
0x02600000
- and you
MUST NOT
install anything from this page

Currently Swedish Comviq phones and also Bulgarian phones (that are 2.2)
MAY
be GEN2

How to find out what BLADE you have (GEN1 or GEN2)

You need tom install this app
Ask Mr Pigfish

(RAR file attached to first post of above link - for devices that don't have the Market)

When you run the APP the first line will be

Mr.Pigfish says you have a Gen1 model

or

Mr.Pigfish says you have a Gen2 model

If it's not Gen1 then STOP HERE! - INSTALLING A GEN1 ROM ON A GEN2 DEVICE WILL BRICK IT

This guide replaces the Old Guide that only showed you how to install clockwork using Fastboot.

This new Guide does not require you to have any drivers on your PC.

There are two ways to install a ROM
  • Using
    Clockwork

  • Using the
    Total Phone Transfer System
    (TPT)

    Clockwork
    is a replacement for the
    Recovery tool
that ships with the ZTE Blade.

If you Boot up the device while holding down the
    VOLUME DOWN
button, the phone boots into the recovery system.

The ZTE one has no use to us - so we replace it with one that is very useful.

The recovery partition also contains a Linux Kernel - this is loaded before clockwork.

The Total Phone Transfer System, does not require you to have Clockwork installed - it does however make much more fundimental changes to your device.

    TPT is really for more
    experienced users
    - you can only install using the TPT method if the ROM has been specially packed for it.

So there are 5 mini Guides here
    1. How to Install Clockwork using Recovery Manager

    2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

    3. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork Manually

    4. How to Install a Total Phone Transfer

    5. How to Install Clockwork using Fastboot (old way)

    First
    - go and pick a ROM from the

Older ROM's can be installed with
    Clockwork 2.5.1.8
    - you can install this if you want - but
    Clockwork 3.0.2.8
    is more current.

(this guide currently shows you how to install 3.0.2.8 - however to install 2.5.1.8 - just swap to the newer file - the
    instructions are the same
    )

This Guide will select a ROM to show you the commands, but you can choose your own and substitute the name of your file.

    New users
    should follow the
    1. How to Install Clockwork

    then follow
    2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="
    ></param><param'>
    ></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

If you have just arrived here / or you want to understand some of these terms.

Then you may want to cross reference with the Android Glossary

    Unlocking for ANY SIM

You do not need to unlock your device to use any SIM, the SIM lock is separate to the ROM.

You can generate an unlock code so the phone can be used with ANY SIM (see Free Version)

The APN settings will need to be updated for your provider.

This Guide will NOT work on ZTE Joe (Vodaphone 845) or the ZTE V9 or the ZTE Racer - You may BRICK your device if you try using the files mentioned in this post.

    1. How to Install Clockwork using Recovery Manager

Good News - there are 3 ways to get
    Clockwork
    onto your
    Recovery Partition
    .

This is going to show you the easiest - however if you want to see the other ways - go and look in the Second Post (Scroll down a lot)

Once you have installed Clockwork - you do not need to do it again to change to another ROM.

The easiest way to get Clockwork onto your Recovery system is to use
    .

    However you cannot run the
    ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
    unless you have
    root
    (Superuser).

    First we install
    . (
    )

This is an application - you copy the APK to your phone over USB (or just download in on your phone) then open the file from an APP that lets you browse your SDcard.

There is a Filer app already on your phone, or you can download other ones from the Market (Astro / Es File Explorer)

Files downloaded on the phone go to
    /SDCard/Downloads

    So here are the Steps

    Warning
: Androot may be detected by a Virus Checker as -
    Trojan:Unix/Rootkit

This is a false positive - Androot is designed to break the security of Android - that's why it gets detected.

Download to your Phones SD Card
    • (
      )

    • (check you get the right one -
      0.36b
      )

    • - not the ZIP file

      Check files are Good
      • Install
        from the Market

      • Open
        Astro File Manager
        from the
        App Drawer
        - browse to the
        recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
        file

      • Hold your finger on the file and choose
        Details
        - check the the
        MD5 Sum
        is
        39ce6be5ccea9081556acc3a4b422c48
        - if not re-download the file.

        Actions

          Universalandroot
          from the APK you downloaded

          Universalandroot
          from the
          App Drawer

        • Choose
          Go Root

        • Unzip
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the ZIP you downloaded

        • Install
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the APK

        • Launch
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
          from the
          App Drawer

        • Allow the
          ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager App
          to have
          Superuser Rights

        • Hit the
          Recovery
          tab.

        • Hit the
          MENU
button on your device and choose
          Update Database

        • Choose
          Install Recovery

        • If you have more than one IMG file on the sdcard you will be presented with a list - choose
          recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img

          Problems

          • If Recovery Manager keep force closing - try:

            re-rooting the phone (Universal Root)

removing the Cache of Recovery Manager (in Settings > Applications)

Use a task killer to kill both Superuser and Recovery Manager

That's it you have Clockwork installed: Now lets get a ROM on

            2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager

            We are going to use
            ZTE-Blade Recovery Manage
to tell Clockwork what to do.

However in the future you can now
            enter Clockwork
            by:
            • In the
              ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager App
              choose
              Reboot into Clockwork

            • Hold down the
              VOLUME DOWN
button when booting up the phone

              - it will be a ZIP file at least 90MB.

If you can't pick then get the
              (r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip)

              Actions
              • Open
                Astro File Manager
                from the
                App Drawer
                - browse to the
                Rom Zip file you choose
                (r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip)

              • Hold your finger on the file and choose
                Details
                - check the the
                MD5 Sum
is the same as the one shown on the thread you go the ROM from - if not re-download the file. (cb1718841318a63775b020e6c544edfa)

              • Launch
                ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager
                from the
                App Drawer

              • Hit the
                Firmware
                tab

              • Hit the
                MENU
button on your device and choose
                Update Database

              • If you want to make a complete backup of your entire phone : use the option
                Backup Current Firmware
                - this will put a FULL backup of your device onto the SDCard (in a directory called clockwork)

              • Choose
                Install Firmware
                -
                Not the firmware update

              • If you have more than one ZIP file on the sdcard you will see a list, pick the ROM file you downloaded (Large zip file) - Choose
                OK
                (r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip)

                The phone will reboot into
                Clockwork
                and
                automatically
                perform the following tasks:
                • install the ROM

                • wipe data and cache partitions

                • reboot into the new ROM

                  Help it won't boot

let it try for about 6 minutes before you give up.

If you tried to use the Install Firmware Update and the phone won't boot, then you need to Wipe manually (Factory Reset).

This you will do in clockwork

                  • Remove the battery

                  • Put the battery back in

                  • Hold the
                    Volume Down
                    button turn the phone on

                  • Use
                    Volume Up
                    /
                    Down
                    to move between options

                  • Use
                    Home key
                    to select an option

                  • Use
                    Back key
                    to go back

                  • From the clockwork menu choose: wipe cache partition.

                  • From the clockwork menu choose: wipe data/factory reset.

                  • From the main menu choose: Reboot

If this doesn't work then it could be that the ROM you downloaded got damaged.

You need to download the ROM again and copy the File to the SDCard and install again.

This you will do in clockwork

                  The phone now reboots.

                  4. How to install a Total Phone Transfer

This technique uses a much lower level method of updating your ROM.

                  However it is
                  NEW
, and in development - and only a few ROMs are currently available (but they are newer ones).

Using TPT allows you to change all of the sections of your phone in
                  one single install
. This means that the BOOT, RECOVERY and ROM all get installed together.

TPT also has the power to change other much deeper parts of the device; the first discovery has been that you can change the

Here is a video of TPT in action
                  (thanks isambard)

                  Compatibility

Currently the Hungarian TPT has been confirmed to work on ZTE Blades from the following countries

                  [*]
                  Hungarian

                  [*]
                  Greek

                  [*]
UK - both TFT and OLED

                  [*]
                  French

                  [*]
                  Indian - Dell XCD35

                  [*]
                  Austrian

                  [*]
                  Switzerland

Please (if you are not a hardcore user) DO NOT TRY it on a device not confirmed

                  Preparation

                  YOU
                  MUST
NETWORK UNLOCK YOUR PHONE BEFORE INSTALLING

Go here and get your phone unlocked first

Be sure before you carry on

ClockworkMod install method is much safer, more universal and more recoverable. If the device you have is not in the compatibility list then
                  STOP
. This update method - if applied to a device that's not supported - may BRICK IT (make the phone unrecoverable)

MD5 Check your ZIP file before you carry on if you dont you have a good chance of damaging your device

                  Applying a TPT

    [*]
Mount your phone on USB or put the SDCard into a USB card reader.

    [*]
    Create a directory called
    image
(lowercase) on the root of the SDcard (not in any other directories on the sdcard)

    [*]
Extract the contents of the ZIP file to the
    image
    directory on your SD card
(For example: If the drive letter of the SD card is "S:" then extract the content of the ZIP to S:\image)

[*]Unmount the SDCard and turn the phone off, remove the battery, put the battery back in.

[*]Switch on your phone by holding Menu + volume up + power (hold all three together)

[*]Installation will automatically update your firmware, after it the phone restarts (When the updating process starts, you can release the keys) you may or may not see green text here - some users dont

[*]After booting - remove or rename the image directory on your SDCard or you can accidently re-flash your phone

    5. How to Install Clockwork using Fastboot

On some newer phone you cannot get into fastboot.

To try this turn the phone back on with '
    volume up
    ' held.

If all you see is a big grey block with the letters ZTM in the middle, then you will have to use another method to get clockwork onto your device.

On Windows you will need to install the ZTE Blade Drivers.

If you do not install the drivers you will see "
    waiting for device
    " when using the fastboot-windows

    Drivers here :

Some users report these drivers work when the first do not work :

The only tool you need is a md5sum checker.

MD5sum is a way of checking that the file you have downloaded has not been corrupted in any way, when you run the MD5sum command against a files the response is the files "fingerprint", if this differs from the expected MD5, then you need to re-download the file

    Windows

    Get your md5sum utility from:
    (COMMAND LINE VERSION)

Extract this Zip file contents and put them into your
    Fastboot
directory on your PC (make one in c drive).

    Download fastboot (Mediafire Pro)

Extract fastboot on your Desktop (windows users do it on the root of C drive)

    Download 3.0.2.8: ClockworkMod Recovery

    - not the ZIP file

    Move the file
    recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
    into the
    fastboot
    directory

Open a Terminal (or a command window if you are in Windows)

    cd c:\fastboot
    Linux alternative command
    cd Desktop/fastboot
    md5sum recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
Check that the outputted MD5 is: 39ce6be5ccea9081556acc3a4b422c48 Turn off your phone and take out the battery. Unplug the phone from the PC / charger. Replace the battery and turn the phone back on with 'volume up' held. The device will stay at the 'green android' screen. Plug the phone into the PC. In the terminal /command window (still in the fastboot directory)
    fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
    Linux alternative command
    sudo ./fastboot-linux flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
    MAC
if you see the error :
ERROR: could not get pipe properties rebooting...
you should be able to ignore it - check you can get into clockwork (see step 2)
    all
    If you get
"writing 'recovery'… FAILED (status read failed (Protocol error)) android"
change the usb cable, and try another USB port.
    all
    If you keep getting
    waiting for device
and you have tried installing drivers - then you could try the alternate Stage 1 (see below) which does not use fastboot
When this finishes, in the terminal run
    fastboot-windows reboot

    Linux alternative command
    sudo ./fastboot-linux reboot
    )

Wait for the phone to reboot

You can now use the Volume Down button (when powering on the phone) to get to the ClockworkMod menu

Hi there

I've got a Gen1 Blade and I'm having trouble with the Recovery Manager v0.36beta. It says "Currently Installed Recovery: Unrecognised". I've tried pressing MENU followed by "Update database" and it doesn't help. I've tried using different Clockwork versions but no luck their either.

All the M5D sums check out.

But then I tried to boot in to recovery mode, and the clockwork thing does appear and seems ok (I've only ever chose the reboot option), so does that mean its ok to continue? I just don't want to forge ahead and risk bricking the phone.

Thanks

El

Sorted it! Phone needs to have internet connectivity to update database on RecoveryManager_0.36b. Doh!

Now to get on with adding the ROM...

Hi Folks, I've run in to trouble again!

I'm installing a ROM on my gen1 blade for the first time. I've got clockwork 4.0.0.2 installed fine and installing Swedish Spring RLS5 seems to go well. But then I reboot, and after the green robot it goes to the android screen while it installs stuff in the back ground and it just stops there. It never finishes whatever its doing. Not seeing any search results on the modaco forums either :/

Hope i've not bricked it!

Help is mucho appreciated!

PS. I've cross-posted this in the SS RLS5 forum

Managed to fix it myself. I was fiddling about, wiped the user data and then it installed fine.

:) sounds like alot of work, i just bought my orange on ebay unlocked. Never had a phone like this b4 so i'm rather scared to do anything with it B) Its working fine right now and i dont really do much with it since i dont have a data plan, do you think it worth the trouble to customize the rom? i'm so scared it would brick on me :D

I did try to install the pig thing to see if i have a gen1 or gen2 but the site wouldnt let me install ;x

Get the wifi set up and you could do plenty without a data plan. But it's not compulsory :)

What site wouldn't let you install pigfish? Confused.

First I want to thank you Steven not only for the work done but even more for the kind and helping way how you answer questions in this forum.

What I haven't been able to find: after wiping the user data and rebooting, how do I get my user data (email-accounts, wifi-settings, ...) back? I tried with Titanium, but apparently pulled back some wrong things, because suddenly I encountered "google.process.acore" Forced Closes and could not do anything with my phone until I wiped my user data again.

I wanted to 'thanks' for all the effort that's gone into this site, but I've not ended up lying on a bed of roses, just ended up confused at what seems to be lots of ways of doing things, and with a useless phone. Cautionary tale.

But it didn't work out like that. Took delivery of an OSF Gen1 today. Noted how poor the Orange installation was. Had previously read several guides trying to pick my way through what to do and what apps needed installing to do it in order to upgrade to Swedish Spring.

Rooted - done

ClockworkMod installed and flashed. It was 3.0.2.7 from what I recall.

Installed and updated database with Recovery Manager, but found that trying to save the Clockwork 3.0.2.8 img just gave me a web page with million bits of jibberish (to the human eye) on it so I moved on. (This may now have been fatal.)

Downloaded SS Rls5 from here along with the appropriate kernels should they be needed http://tinyurl.com/4xatu5j

Then used Clockwork to install the SS5 rom, requiring that a back up be made first, that the cache be wiped and that the davlik be wiped too.

And that seems to the be the end of that - stuck at a green robot - I guess it's a brick.

Gutted.

Holding the down volume key while booting does nothing - I figure that means I wasn't successful at getting that ClockworkMod into the boot partition - that fatal step above.

Is there a way out of my hole or have I stuffed already, just 8 hours old!

Thanks, but bugger. I can't afford to lose a phone, having no job isn't doing much to help me get a new one now.

Nathan.

How very odd. Having gone to bed after taking the battery out for the 3rd time in order to shut fone down, this morning it booted. Looks like I get a second chance. I clearly need to start by getting the ClockworkMod Recovery installed first. Must try harder. Nathan.

All sorted now, the root of the problem for me was that I couldn't get the ClockworkMod recovery img downloaded on my phone. Instead of giving me the option to save the img, the browser opened it. Instead of labouring with the phone browser I connected the phone to my laptop this morning and downloaded the image to the phone sd card using my laptop, which worked fine. I was then able to install it properly using the Recovery Manager app as per step 1. Then it was no trouble to install the Swedish Spring ROM following the steps in part 2.

Now I need to be looking over the apps and widgets to see what I need to be installing to make ROM updates straightforward in future without having to re-download stuff each time.

As many people have posted before, a great many thanks to all involved with helping noobs like me get rid of Orange non-sense and freeing things up so we can use phones properly.

Cheers. Nathan.

Hi,

I've bought a ZTE Blade a few weeks ago and I'm now thinking about rooting it. This guide seems to be the best from far! However I've got one question. My phone has Eclair (2.1); the ROM I'm planning on installing is Swedish Spring RLS5, and this page says it's a ROM based on Froyo (2.2). So my question is: is the upgrade from Eclair to Froyo going to be made automatically when I do all the installation process? Or do I need to do it myself beforehand?

Thanks!

Hold on, I'm confused :(

I fancy trying CyanogenMod 7 on a virgin, unrooted ZTE SF. Now, according to the CyanogenMod WIKI and it says that GEN 1 phones (which this is) must be updated to GEN 2 phones first - is this correct?

Thanks for any help.

I went the same way, it went smoothly :-)

By installing any ROM you get the OS version of that ROM - so no need to "upgrade"

ugh this is annoying. I've got to this point ~

  • Hit the MENU button on your device and choose Update Database
  • If you want to make a complete backup of your entire phone : use the option Backup Current Firmware - this will put a FULL backup of your device onto the SDCard (in a directory called clockwork)
  • Choose Install Firmware - Not the firmware update

however when ever I press install firmware a message comes up saying

"Sorry currently only ClockworkMod Recovery is supported for installing a new Firmware!"

what do I do to get around this? I'm practically tearing my hair out, I've been trying for hours and so far I can't get passed this.

EDIT - the ROM is now installed (the one mentioned in the guide) because I installed it manually. I'm now rebooting but it's taking an awful long time. I go past the Green Man and now I have the MoDaCo logo and website start screen. It's flashing on and off at various paces (< 30 - 60 secs between). Is this normal or is it quite a quick start up? I understand the phone needs to do it's thing but it's been about 20 (or more) minutes now :/

Hi, Hope I'm posting this to the right place, I'm completely new to this.

  • "Hit the MENU button on your device and choose Update Database
  • If you want to make a complete backup of your entire phone : use the option Backup Current Firmware - this will put a FULL backup of your device onto the SDCard (in a directory called clockwork)
  • Choose Install Firmware - Not the firmware update

however when ever I press install firmware a message comes up saying

"Sorry currently only ClockworkMod Recovery is supported for installing a new Firmware!"

I read the post from su@per and I've got the same problem. I wanted to do a backup and I got

"Sorry currently only ClockworkMod Recovery is supported for backing up your Firmware!"

and

"Sorry currently only ClockworkMod Recovery is supported for installing a new Firmware!"

when I try to Install Firmware.

I don't have "Reboot into Clockwork" but "Reboot into Recovery" in the Recovery Manager list but I do get "Currently Installed Recovey ClockworkMod Recovery v_3.0.2.8" at the bottom of the screen.

Should I go to step 3 to remove the battery and try using Clockwork manually or would it be better to choose "Reboot into into Recovery" in the Recovery Manager list?

Help will be much appreciated.

************** I have just done it all manually - took the battery out, booted into Clockwork and installed the ROM. It all went went fine. *********************

@ go_Android.

If I were you I'd use the TPT method by Wbaw, it'll upgrade your phone to Gen 2 and install a ROM of your choice as well as Clockworkmod recovery if you want to change ROM's.
