New niggle...

Google search page now uses GPS !!!! and its caning the battery... how can I prevent this please ?

Could try pressing menu while in the browser and going to settings. Scroll down and clear location access, then when Google asks for your location say no. If its not allowed to find it, I assume it should stop it turning GPS on.

I've tried to restore permissions in Clockworkmod.. tried another sdcard.. tried the Browser.apk and DownloadProvider.apk in JJ9 (fc)...

Any suggestions?

I find that the auto brightness doesn't increase brightness regardless of ambient light; output luminence is the same as the low setting. Anyone else find this and a solution?

Hi could you post a link to the YouTube videos you had issues with? That would be very helpful.

Anil.

Hmm, It's not doing it now, well except on Go Weather which still has the vertical lines.

I wonder if it is some kind of conflict with another app.

Another bug, I would really like to know if others are having this.

When in Google Maps (usually) autorotate causes the screen to become corrupted sometimes and then will return to normal after a few more rotations.

I may post a video of this to make it clearer. Sometimes happens in Google Nav too.

Has anyone seen this? Or is it just my phone on the fritz?

Hi pxpto,

Have you tried using another browser form the ANDROID Market? I use Miren, you could also try Opera or Dolphin HD. If those work great, if not, then try going into recovery mode, doing a Factory reset (you will lose all data so be warned), and then wipe the Dalvik cache and the normal cache (simply for good measure). Then install Swedish Spring RLS5. That way you have a clean system without system .apk's from JJ9. Then try downloading via the browser or one of the browsers I mentioned.

Anil.

Hi -+-, good news about YouTube working as expected. I tried maps and navigation both worked perfectly with auto rotation no video corruption. It seems you have an app that may be causing your problems. Perhaps the Go weather widget? I am just guessing now. I'm sorry, apart from re-flashing SS RLS5, I don't know what else to suggest.

i have a question.

First of all, I started in android a week ago, (newb here). Ok here we go

Im not using a cache partition so there is a tmpfs /cache directory (43mb)

At first I thought that these 43mb were reserved and "used all the time" That sounds silly because if I was correct, a cache partition would be better, at least there would be 43 mb more at avalaible mememory. So I investigated a bit

in quick system info app there is a tab which provide information about ram memory (total, avalaible, idle, buffers, cache, swap..)

when I push something into /cache directory, idle memory decreases the file size and cache in ram increases the same. (also with cache info in main menu, but i'm talking about ram cache info in RAM tab)

CONCLUSION: the mounted /cache directory created on ram using tmpfs, is allocated in the "blocks" of RAM used to cache, so those 43 mb (or a part of them) are not "ocupped" all the time, and when /cache directory is empty, there's no ram being used for that.

Is my conclusion correct? Or its better have a dedicated partition in ROM because I'll get more available memory?

thanks in advance

offtopic= whats is the difference in avalaible memory and idle? How much avalaible memory do u guys have?and used for buffer?

Yes now Go Weather is working as expected :)

Thing is, it was so repeatable before I posted and I tried all the usual restarts and battery removal and it was consistent, now gone, well I suppose I should be happy but I hate not knowing if it will return.

As for the maps, I played around and eventually uninstalled Google's update to the maps and navigation and now it is fine. When re-installed it is still a problem. So uninstalled again and it works as expected. I guess I will have to wait for an update that does not misbehave.

I can live with the SS5 installed version of maps, its fine.

My only remaining issue is not just a Swedish Spring issue but more of an Android one, no streaming for Ogg Vorbis! Despite it being playable as a file.

Many Thanks Anil for testing some of these out and helping with it all.

SS5 is a very nice system to use, I am hoping CM7 on 2.3 will begin to support HW acceleration so that I can have the speed and bluetooth keyboard support. B)

Cheers,

Matt

Your conclusion sounds fine.

Memory is a premium so linux tmpfs filesystems dynamically expand to a maximum size so no content=no size.

The system will cache accessed data anyway (not in /cache) and show it as free memory because this cached data will be cleared to make way for program data on request. It is there for convenience and is low priority.

Don't definately know the answer to your second question unless idle simply means free and unused and available means free if required but used for cache at present.

Update, I may have tracked the video grid-lines problem down to overzealous use of "Advanced Task Killer" not quite sure what got killed that would restart so badly. This did not fix the Google maps corruption issue however.

Hopefully if someone else makes the same discovery they will find this thread.

Best practice with ATK seems to build a recommended ignore list, and leave it alone, then set Auto-Kill level to "Safe". Although this may be premature as I have not panned out all the variables like a good nerd should.

Thought the best practice with ATK was to uninstall it

Well, difficult, it does do what it does and battery life is improved quite a lot.

Problem is that everything wants to run in the background when your not using it. It's like windows that way, a system tray full of crap.

They usually aren't running in the background, just loaded into memory so that they can be opened faster next time you use them. Not using a task killer is best practice for battery life, then your common apps dont have to keep being restarted (which uses more battery power). There are good reasons Android was designed that way, so stop doing it wrong & breaking it.

Hi Matt, I'm glad things started working. We have hand held computers, so with that much power comes complexity and its associated problems. CM7 will hopefully not take too long, but in my honest opinion Gingerbread won't give any more than Froyo has on the Blade.

The Blade is a truly an amazing piece of hardware, a redefinition of value for money, nothing comes even close at twice the price. To go up a level in performance requires meatier hardware, but with that comes the £300+ price tag. We have been a little spoiled by the Blade. But it has also shown us that the smart phone manufacturers are enjoying huge huge profit margins. I can buy a really well spec'd Win 7 laptop for less than a top smart phone. Someone's getting the shaft, and it ain't the hardware manufacturers.

Hopefully another Blade like gem will come out in the next 6 months, and please don't say it's the upcoming Skate. I mean something in the 1.2 Ghz range. Then we will truly have an über sweet handset. Meanwhile I will thoroughly enjoy RLS5 and the Blade.

Sorry for the long post. Anil.

Hi,

First of all I'd just like to thank kallt_kaffe for a truly amazing rom, I went from orange stock rom to to swedish spring and it's so much better in every way B)

I'd like to ask anyone else who is using swedish spring:

Does your phone display your phone number? If you go to Menu/Settings/About Phone/Status and look at 'My Phone Number' it just states 'Unknown' on my san francisco.

I have noticed it does this no matter what sim I am using and although it's only a minor issue, sometimes people ask me what my number is and I have no way of finding it on the phone lol, I know I should memorise it but after a few beers I easily forget :)

So is it just me or does your phone running swedish spring rls5 keep your number secret from you?

Thanks

Guest rockstarszzzz

Hi All,

A noob question here, hope I get help for this:

If I am running SSRLS5 and decide to switch to Softbank kernel - will I need to wipe everything? or can I only wipe dalvik and flash?

Also,

If I am running SSRLS5 and decided to switch to adb overclocked version of SSRLS5 - will I need to wipe everything? or can I only wipe dalvik and flash?

Looking forward to your suggestions..

Nope, just dalvik should be fine

Dalvik will be fine too. But that AHB version will just drain your battery faster without any noticeable performance gain, IMO.

Hi, I'm running RLS5 with the Gingerbread UI theme applied on top. But apart from that I am pretty stock. If you want the Gingerbread UI add on get it here;

http://www.thisiswhatwedo.com/fileshuttle/...ead-ss_0878.zip

this file is hosted from my own webserver, it's my personal backup, just Flash the file using Clockwork recovery.
