I know people will tell me not to post this, but which ROM should I use?

Recommended Posts

I've been wary of updating to a custom ROM because I've heard conflicting things about various custom ROMs dropping calls, wasting loads of battery, etc. so which ROM can I download that I can reliably rely on?

If I've posted this in the wrong section, please move it to the right one or advise me where to repost it.

Thanks.

That's like asking "Which Car should I buy" - it all depends on what you want and how you're going to use it.

In brief:

  • Stock Rom (Orange) - Awful, get rid of it!
  • Stock Rom (De-oranginated MCR) - Better as it's stripped out the orange stuff but its running 2.1
  • Froyo (JJ, FLB, SS) - Speed improvements, nicer UI, everything works.
  • Gingerbread (CM7) - My favourite, although there still may be bugs. FM Radio doesn't work and some people complain about USB tether. Personally I use it daily without an issue.

Best bet is to get a shortlist of ROM's to try (eg. MCR, JJ, FLB, SS, CM7). Now flash one, use it for a few hours/days (depending on how impatient you are), then wipe and flash another.

Another thing is that different people have different issues with different ROMs, so I would strongly suggest you try the different ROMs you are interested in for a week.

Cheers, Nick

Considering SS is an evolution of JJ, should you really be considering the latter? It's really out of date, and compared to the roms we have now, is a POS. Also, it might be good to compare Modaco r12 Froyo.

Calling the MCR r4 Eclair ROM de-oranginated is also not a good idea, as the de-oranginated ROM is a completely seperate ROM itself.

Oh Bravo, you took the bait and fell for it. Every question like this brings out the entire spectrum of armchair pundits and their "this is better than that" cobblers. Personal opinion, bias, misjudgement, misinformation. Get real folks...

For the record, JJ is far from a POS. What possible grounds have you got to even think that? It is still a valid and functional ROM. I use it alongside SS and TBH it is as good and in some instances, better. It is also easy to tweak/adapt, as is SS. I do enough of it...

In any case, as someone else has pointed out, the OP asking this question is utterly pointless. Goose and gander, melud.

@OP

Just use clockwork to do a nandroid of your current setup, download all the ROMS you fancy the look of and play!

Flash yourself silly for a couple of hours and see what you make of them

If you don't like any of them, reflash your original with clockwork and you're back where you started, but you've had a jolly time

Don't take other people's word for it as it's all down to personal preference

Incidentally, CM7 stable is the best and you should use that one

Nearly caught you out there, didn't i? :)

Yeah listen to the guys man Try them all out - i love them all but some have weakness - the one i find myself going back to over and over again has to be the SWEDISH rom its pretty nice - and i am getting 7.55 on my linpack testing.. you can download 170 plus apps and still have space and it dont force close or anything. But do Nandroid all you r stable roms with your settings and the like. Keep them on the computer because sometimes the phone restore plays about. Just trust your own judgement and like all the kool guys in this Forum keep saying TRY TRY TRY....Happy Blading what a bloody good phone we have, I put it up to my girls Desire and a smile comes on my face.
